I heard something on the radio about this and then I did a google search to followup. Apparently, there's strong evidence that as nations have gotten richer and better able to adopt the latest hygiene measures; sanitation, antibiotics, clean water...the more they have been plagued by autoimmune diseases of all kinds, particularly allergies, MS, Crohn's Disease, IBS, and others. The idea seems to be that humans have developed a symbiotic relationship with parasites, especially worms over the course of our evolution. Without getting into the details of how parasites might actually keep autoimmune diseases at bay, the evidence is that they do. In fact, there are trials going on comparing people who already have these diseases; one group receiving a placebo, and the other doses of hookworm eggs. Those receiving the eggs see improvement in their conditions.

Autoimmune diseases are rare in third world countries, while growing very fast in the first world. The difference appears to be that the poorer ones have plenty of parasites.

How does this relate to TMS? Dr Sarno gives a psychosomatic explanation for many of these diseases, eg allergies and GI disturbances. While that might be valid, this other theory might also be worth pursuing.

I found articles, espec one by the NIH (National Institute of Health) by googling "worms - autoimmune".

I've seen articles about studies involving the worms that inhabit farmed pigs because the farmers have been exposed to them for so many years with no ill effects, and they have been used successfully in treating chron's disease in trials.
