Hello,
I am a sarno convert from a few years back. I cured my back pain with it. While vacationing in NZ last week I felt a slight pain in my jaw, guess what I cant get it out of my head. Now the domino affect of oh my you have tmj because the pain is centered below my ear. I bought the mouthpiece, I cant sleep all that jazz. I am fair certain this is TMS not TMJ. Can someone help me get through to myself so I actually believe it. I need freakin sleep and this jaw pain is very annoying.
Thanks,
Ethan |

It is probably from stess from you vacation, even vacations can be stessful in a good way.
I would use heat and ice and maybe off the counter pain medication, and just not do any heavy duty chewing till it calms down. |

I think I am going to provoke it, like when I start chewing I can feel it right, then I say F it and get an apple, I challenge the TMS and the pain all of sudden goes away. Thank you for replying, its hard for me because I have never had a dental TMS condition, only horrible lower back pain, but I do remember Sarno stating something about how a large majority of TMS can happen while on vacation. Anyone else care to comment on similar TMJ TMS experiences? New Zealand was worth the TMS any day of the week. TMS will be defeated, its just rough when you have to start the whole process all over again, I am confident it will take a lot less time for me to beat it because I believe so strongly. Sleeping pills are currently my only vice in regard to pain. |

There are other causes of jaw pain aside from TMJ syndrome/disorder. However, if you've been diagnosed with TMJ, then that is just TMS.
Good luck!

What are other causes of jaw pain that moves around from different sides of the face, comes out of nowhere from the blue, and comes and goes? You sound like a doubter MK. Thanks for the reply however. |

I don't know anything about you (age, past medical history, etc.) It's MOST PROBABLY just TMJ/TMS, but I didn't want to be irresponsible in my response. Jaw claudication as a symptom of temporal arteritis, atypical angina (especially if the pain is worse during physical exertion), etc. are just a couple of the other POTENTIAL causes of jaw pain. Of course, these are far less common than TMJ/TMS (especially in a patient with a history of other TMS symptoms and without any other significant past medical history), but I just wanted to play it safe. I was just trying to give you some more confidence in your pursuit. Sorry if I did just the opposite of that. You probably have TMS ;-) so don't worry. Good luck!
Got any golf tips for me? I sure can use them.

I'm your age, so I don't think its angina, not sure if you are kidding or not, but number one tip in golf is to look down, when you look up you will see how awful your shot is :)
About the pain though, I went to an ENT because I thought the root cause was my ear, he told me my ear looked fine, and explained it might be my jaw. The pain then went away, it came back about a week ago and my sleep has been gd awful since then, even worse now that I am back at work and such. There was no physical injury which caused this pain, but when I called my dad and told him the symptoms he immediately explained he had the same thing, and I had to buy a mouth guard because I was grinding my teeth, something that has never been an issue for me. The more I thought about buying a mouthpiece to correct something that had never been an issue for me, the more I thought. I called more friends one with IBS and guess what else he had TMJ!! He even had a crazy $$ custom mouthpiece, reminds me of all those people who told me to buy all this back **** for my car my desk at work. Anyways I am 99% confident it is TMS, I will keep you all updated, please do share similar stories!!

Haha OK that's probably good advice for me.
So it definitely sounds like TMJ, which is just TMS. Keep at it and you should be as good as new again real soon.
I say hit the links and just forget about it. Good luck buddy!

A relative was diagnosed with TMJ, told me her x-rays were "a mess" and was trying some dental something or other device. She was in agony and down to a liquid diet. Someone recommened a psyD to her. She has been going to therapy and guess what. She is pain-free.
And I'm with you, bestcaddy, on challenging the pain. Our bodies are strong and don't need to be babied unless we believe they do. |

I just saw a Dentist yesterday because I am grinding my teeth so badly I have caused such pain that I am now sensitive to hot and cold. I am told I need to be fitted for a mouth guard but of course, insurance doesn't cover it.....but my mouth hurts. I too wondered if it was TMS.

Nocturnal bruxism can effectively be treated through the use of hypnosis (in a significant percentage of patients). I definitely think its worth looking into. I've read that sleep interrupted biofeedback can also be effective, but I have no experience with that modality. Clearly, it is a psychosomatic response that is under unconscious control (~TMS). If you are having trouble shaking it and the condition is only worsening, then I highly recommend a trial of hypnosis. Good luck!

MK Thanks for that advice. I have never tried hypnosis as I have this fearful idea of it.....but will look into it. I think it has to do with the notion that one is "not in control."

This is a very common myth and misconception. It is entirely untrue.
Good luck!

TMJ gone!!! No more, I wouldnt let TMS get me again. Now I got insomnia as I said before. Ambien rocks, but still my girlfriend wants to kill me. Before you spend 600 dollars on the mouthpiece
A. buy a 40 dollar one at walgreens like I did B. Throw it away when you realize its TMS not TMJ
P.S. TMJ=TMS |
