He was good. My first appt. he said definitely TMS for all the back stuff. Went to him for a second issue, a tendon issue in my wrist (not carpal, DeQuervain's). When I went the second time he was not clear whether my wrist was TMS or not, he actually said it ma not be. I wanted so desperately for him to say it was, but he didn't want to commit an answer. So I ended up having surgery on the wrist and haven't had any issues since (placebo? who knows). He is good but plan on waiting a long time. He gets very behind in his schedule but he will spend a lot of time with you. |

It's interesting that Dr. Martinez is a physiatrist with a spine specialty - most are tied to physical therapy and physical causes,and would not be partial to a TMS diagnosis. It also means that he has further training in reading and understanding scans than would a family doc.
I've been thinking of going to see someone myself to finally pound the diagnosis into my head. Does anyone know how much he charges for an exam? Does he have follow up programs/lectures?

Another option would be Dr. Sopher, who works about an hour or hour and a half north of Boston, in Exeter, NH. Here's his website:

I've emailed him before and he seems like a really nice guy. He's written a book (self-published, though) about TMS, too. It includes chapters on many of the sub-types of TMS. He's a family doctor.

I don't know what Martinez charges because my primary care doctor allowed me to go to him under my insurance. He did a referral for me so I just paid my copay. |
