Hi All,
I was wondering if someone can give me some advise. About 2 weeks ago I was lifing heavy weights. I am girl, 106 pounds and I was doing military D.B. press for my shoulder. I felt a little strain because the weight was heavy.
Okay, well that night while I was on my way out of the gym I felt pain in my thumb. To make the long story short. The pain is in my MCP thumb Joint left side. I worked two days later and also played guitar and it seemed to worsen the pain.
So, I decieded maybe I'd better go to the doc. Lately I have a fear of Arthrirtis in my joint. The reason is I am a guitarist and don't want to hear anything about it.
I went to the doc. last Thursday and he encouraged me to get an X-ray. Yesterday I got X-ray results back and my X-ray was CLEAN. No facture, no dislocation, and no arthritis.
I thought this would help me heal and concentate that this must be TMS. But still I have pain...
My doc. did say that if I didn't get better in 7 days that he would send me to a hand specialist because I could have a ruptured ligament. There is on swelling only pain.
Should I think TMS and not worry? Thanks, Kalo |

Hi Kalo, I'm a pro drummer, years ago I had thumb pain, first in one, then the other also. I soaked my hands in hot water, used Ice, saw all kinds of MD's. It eventually got better after many months of pain and stress, and I somehow managed to still play, but there was a lot of pain and fear of damaging my thumbs and ruining my career. I'm now convinced that this was TMS and I've also subsequently had it in my wrists, elbows, knees, neck, lower back and just about every other place you can imagine. I believe that if you go to an MD they WILL eventually find something wrong, because they are just like mechanics, It's their job to find something wrong, so that's what they do... it just might not be causing the pain and will definitely feed into the fear/pain cycle of TMS. just relax and let it go |

Hi scd1833,
What you're saying is true about Doctos searching until they find an answer.
I received a clean X-ray and don't have to worry about arthritis or any other bone defect.
Obessing over the pain is horrible and it does keep me fixiated that maybe something else is going on. I am afraid to play guitar because of making it worst and I've stopped lifting weights.
Funny before this strain happend with weights I could play Hendrix all day on guitar and NEVER felt a thing. I never had any thumb problems up until two weeks ago prior to my gym workout.
Thanks for the encouragement and I just concentrate on the TMS factor.
Kalo! |

The body heals. Any pain that sticks around is likely TMS. Esp. since the xray showed nothing (subjective anyway--my MRI showed herniated disc, yet I have no pain).
Just finished reading Scott Brady's Pain Free For Life and at the back of the book he discusses "crutches" people use and how to overcome them--Fear is one--and it will stop you from complete recovery. Good book for those who may be stuck. I got it from my library.

It surprises me a bit that a regular doc can't tell whether a ligament is ruptured, seems like that would be an obvious thing. Of course, in the absence of finding a broken bone on an x-ray there's always the old standby of a "soft tissue injury." A.k.a., they don't really know what's wrong.
About 30 years ago I landed on a thumb skiing, and it hurt for a couple of months. But, I never restricted my activity with it, and in the long run it did heal. Of course, it never worried me since that isn't where I live.

Hi mizlorinj,
Thanks for the advise! The body does heal and you're right anything longer probably starts to become TMS. Well I am at the two week mark and Dr. Sarno says 6 weeks tops for healing correct? Oh, and I will look into those books you suggested!
Hi weatherman, to be honest I was kind of surprised that my regular MD couldn't tell if my ligament was ruptured. Geez, what has happened to the Doctors of "yester years" where they didn't actually knew what was going on without sending some one to a specialist.
As a matter of fact my MD told me that if nothing shows on my X-ray and my thumb doesn't get better with in 7 days that he wants me to see a hand specialist and he would mostly likely do an MRI.
Well, I am not going down that route as I feel like that will just hinder my progress and could open a can of worms.
Again, I appreciate the TMShelp forum and I appreciate everyones help! Kalo
