I have suffered with anxiety and panic disorder most of my adult life, I just came through about 8 years of little to no anxiety but now I am in a anxiety / panic state that has lasted since late summer. I have left my job and now the money issues are a huge issue between my husband and I and my oldest is furious with me because she cannot dorm at college and has to commute because the money is just not there now. I am also dealing with lower abdominal cramping/pain, had a bought of diverticulitis back in October and I have nueropathy in both feet which many of you are convinced is TMS......but what about anxiety and panic disorders.....is that TMS or is that separate unto itself?
Thank you

I believe that anxiety and panic disorders are TMS. I had suffered with panic attacks as a younger woman. I realized even before Sarno that they were not fatal. nothing terrible ever happened and once I realized that it was just a feeling that caused no damage the attacks vanished. Fear is the worst enemy . Stop being afraid. I used to think I was going to die. I didn't..It isn't easy to over come the fear. Continue to do the program. Get in touch with what is stressing you out. Marsha |

Read - Dr. Claire Weeks - Hope and Help For Your Nerves. Can not recommend it highly enough. Check on Amazon to get one of her books. She is actually, what I think of, as the original Dr. Sarno!!!! |

Yes, Claire Weekes is excellent for anxiety disorders. I also found Pema Chodron's books very helpful (she is a Buddhist, and the books are not specifically related to anxiety or depression, but talk a lot about staying present and staying with your feelings as they arise.
I am absolutely convinced that suppressed anger plays a huge role in the development of anxiety disorders. There are plenty of websites online about treating anxiety disorders, but I think ultimately you have to decide if you're going to treat yourself for an anxiety disorder, or TMS. I have chosen to take the latter route.
Rather than trying to diagnose what is and is not TMS, go back to Sarno's description of "goodist" personality. Do you see yourself in that description? What role is repressed rage playing in your life? |

Whether anxiety is a TMS equivalent or not (and I believe it is), it can cause extreme distress and yes, even harm because some people who suffer from severe anxiety end up taking their own lives. If you are unable to work and are basically not functioning, consider using a benzodiaz.(BDZ) for the short-term to settle your system down enough to be able to delve into what is really behind the anxiety. I have suffered horrible bouts of anxiety that last all day for weeks on end - can't sleep, can't eat. It's hard to work with TMS principles when my anxiety is so severe. I agree, Claire Weeke's books as well as a book I recently found by Dr. Shipko called "Surviving Panic Disorder" are extremely helpful. Shipko is not a proponent of SSRI's to treat anxiety but rather recommends short-term use of BDZ's along with therapy. Claire Weeks also recommends short-term sedation to help get yourself to a place where you can function and then work with more manageable symptoms. Anxiety is the ultimate TMS symptom. It completely takes over and leaves little room for those subconscious thoughts to bubble up. If you can manage your anxiety enough to treat it using TMS techniques, that would be a good first step considering you're also exhibiting classic TMS pain. But it sounds like you're having trouble functioning and could need a little extra help with some medication. When going through my extreme bouts, Pema Chodron was immensely helpful to me as well. "When Things Fall Apart" is my favorite of hers. Wishing you some relief soon. |
