I got the MRI results back today....herniated disc at L4-L5. What a shock. Since I had a version of this pain last year around this time, I'm wondering how long the herniation ha sbeen there. Anyway, they scheduled me for an appt with a neurosurgeon, even though I said absolutely no surgery. Is this the only dr they'll send you to after a dx like this? The nurse was already saying, "only light walking for exercise, don't go on the boat, you're going to have to stop lifting weights....." I am NOT wanting to hear all that. HOWEVER, once you get the dx and here how much more damage you'll do if you don't "take it easy," it's HARD not to believe the disc is the cause of the problems. I knew this is what I'd hear but still......I need a jolt back to the TMS side. I don't know if I should attend this appt. or not.

I've been on the neurology service for almost a month now and I have yet to see a patient with a spinal MRI that did NOT show some disk herniation somewhere. I'm going to keep this one short and sweet: if I were in your shoes, I'd shoot myself before I saw a neurosurgeon.

Best,

Also, what about this....before I "hurt" my back 3 weeks ago, I had ordered a new weighted workout series based on periodization. It has 3 cycles. I love doing lower body weight work (squats, lunges, deadlifts, etc.). Well, before I found Dr. Sarno's book, which had been recommended on the workout forum from someone helped by him, I was convinced I'd never be able to do these lower body workouts again. I also like to do kickboxing and step aerobics on a 6 inch step. I guess what I'm wondering is this: for those dx'ed with disc herniations, what activities do you do? I'm REALLY wanting to get back into it but do still have the fear of lower body weighted work causing more harm (SORRY!). I do still have minor pain but NOTHING compared to what it started out as. And yes, I've heard "no high impact activity, kick boxing is bad for the back, no more weights!" Then again, one guy on the fitness fou has "back problems" and does pretty much what he wants (with modifications from fear I'm sure) and says he's never felt better.

Thanks all

Kim

If you had the same pain last year, then it's probably TMS. A herniated disc, even with conservative treatment, would heal in a matter of weeks. The disc is a soft substance that would reabsorb itself.
Re-read Sarno's book. People with all kinds of scary diagnoses (spinal stenosis, herniated disc, bulging disc, spondolisthesis, spondolysis, degenerative disc disease, arthritis, etc, etc, etc.....) have recovered from their pain using Dr. Sarno's information.
I can't tell you what to do.
But if I were you, I would read, journal, remind myself what's really going on and relax and try not to worry (worrying makes any pain worse).
If you have seen some improvement at all since finding Sarno's theory, then your pain is not from the herniated disc.
Also remember that the reading of MRI's is not an exact science.

Thanks. I think I will re-order the workouts. I did some kickboxing today which was fine. I just like working out and don't want to be limited in what I can do, which is what everyone seems to want to do...tell me what restrictions I have now.
