For more than 10 years I suffered with painful and disabling upper extremity pain, saw specialist after specialist, had 2 disastrous surgeries. About 4 years ago, discovered the brilliant work of Dr Sarno and today am completely unrestricted and free of orthopedic problems.
However, have not been able to get rid of aggravating laryngeal reflux, causing persistent sore throat and hoarseness, and may have been what caused bronchitis this spring. Yesterday I realized the reflux has become an equivalent of what my shoulder pain used to be, i.e., preoccupied with it almost every waking minute, thinking about seeing specalists, researching, trying every measure known, my whole life revolving around the symptom.
With nothing else seeming to work, planning to refocus on Sarno's recommended techniques.
Have read some of the posts here on reflux, and would like to hear from anyone else with similar issues.
Thanks, Randy

Randy -- I share your view that reflux (or GI tract problems generally) can be a TMS symptom. A few years back I started having significant digestive tract problems, including a fair amount of pain in my chest, back, rib cage, etc. Medications like Prilosec helped but not enough. I went to a digestive diseases specialist, who tested me for a range of problems (Sjogren's, celiac disease, etc.). All the tests came back normal. Then I had a colonoscopy, which was normal. After the colonoscopy, all of my GI tract symptoms vanished. I guess my Unconscious could not longer make a convincing case to my brain that there was something wrong with my digestive tract, so it stopped. My doctor said the same thing to me -- many people stop having digestive problems after a colonoscopy comes back normal. My symptoms then migrated elsewhere, of course, as they frequently do. Oddly enough, in the last few months I have seen my digestive problems resume, although I keep telling myself this is TMS and nothing more.
Maybe you should have a colonoscopy -- it worked for me.

Randy, heartburn is definitely just another equivalent. After I conquered my back pain I immediately developed horrible heartburn problems which ended up with me having a Endoscopy as I was convinced their was something wrong. After the doc gave me the all clear, my symptoms stopped immediately. Like Jeff said, my unconscious could no longer make a convincing case to my brain anymore so it just gave up.
You just have to keep that faith that there is nothing wrong with you, keep up the journalling and let time pass (Good old Claire Weeks).

I dealt with this issue a couple of weeks ago. Dry mouth, chronic morning unilateral sore throat (seemed to switch sides daily), hoarseness, postnasal drip, and frequent throat clearing. Took me a couple days to diagnose laryngopharyngeal reflux, then a day or so to rediagnose it as a TMS equivalent, then another few days to get rid of it after I realized that it was just TMS. I think LPR and chronic postnasal drip are both just equivalents. Good luck!
