The words likely and rarely are used all the time in Sarno's books and in posts here. Why not just say. Herniated disks are not the cause of pain. Why rarely the cause. That means, that TMS is only the case in certain situations and some herniated disks do cause pain.
Likely and Rarely are likely to cause problems with fully grasping TMS. People will rarely get better. |

There have been studies comapring people with herniated discs. Many people who have multiple herniated discs have no pain. Before I even accepted TMS as my problem, my doctor said an MRI wasn't even necessary do the aforementioned fact. Hope this helps.

"How long before you have to consider other options than TMS training? When is it time to consider TMS being just a placebo? Has anyone hurt themselves further by not listening to doctors advice and instead being foolish."
Hi D-pain...I though I'd answer both of your posts tat once,so I swiped your other one and pated it here.
In Science, for a theory to be rock solid it has to account for all phemomena OR a new theory must be developed.
Sarno has none of the arrogance of the Drs who treated me...e.g. "Marc, you WILL further damage yourself if you run,you MUST be careful, you are NEVER going to be active again"
I heard all these and more when I did the Medical merry-go-round....absolutes.
See,Sarno is so open-minded,he is constantly evealuating NEW information,so he uses "likely and rarely" to allow for changes in the develpoment of TMS...in fact when I read his first book,he "suspected" Carpal Tunnel syndrome to be a TMS equivalent, but hadn't had enough cases to make a statement...in MBP,the next book,he lists it as his clinical experience was broadening as more cases were dealt with.
In regards to first question,"How long..."...RIGHT NOW! If you're not convinced, and you still believe there is a structural reason for your pain, any old Chiro or Orthopedic surgeon will gladly oblige,....they're always "scaring" up work (sorry about the pun)
In fact,we have a regular poster on this board who DEFINITELY needs to go and have a surgery or 4,as he is constantly questioning rather than asking.......the great thing about Sarno's work,is it leaves the door OPEN...any old time you want to return to the system they are there to welcome you back with a table full of needles, steroids,NSAID's epidurals,surgeries,meds,traction,therapy,acupuncture,electo-stim,shock therapy, chinese herbs, bio feedback.....uh...I think that's all that I tried, but perhaps there is something I missed.
People don't RARELY get better....every person I ever met who read the book got better.
peace
