So I had been dealing with this dry mouth problem for months. I woke up and my back was in spasm on my right side. Not too much, just enough to get my attention and slow me down a little.
So my dry mouth symptoms went away and now I'm back in pain. I truly believed I had some sort of physical ailment or disorder that makes dry mouth. I think I should know by now to suspect TMS.
Back to journaling I guess. And next time my mouth goes dry, I'm going to do the TMS work for it also.
Just wanted to share that obvious equivalent.

Thanks for mentioning this, and please keep us posted on this? I have been diagnosed with "Burning Tongue Syndrome" and while I have had good results with TMS re my headaches, the burning tongue symptom I have not had any success at all, with, so far. (Could be just too many symptoms I have to work on.) I also have "dry eyes" (some doctors have said it is a result of allergy) and I have had a LITTLE success lately re treating it as TMS. (I do not believe the eyes/mouth symptoms I have are Sjogren's, if anyone is wondering, but it did cross my mind several years ago!) There's no real explanation for Burning Tongue Syndrome, so I do think it is psychogenic, and clearly came on during an extremely stressful time in my life. What is odd is that I knew at the time I was enraged and was overtly expressing that rage, so not sure why I got the burning tongue too! Anyway, would be interested in hearing about your progress on this one. |

Hey RageSootheRatio read my posts! I also have dry mouth and dry eyes, I have been stressed about the possibility of Sjogren's but I've really come a long way in recognizing it as the TMS equivilants.

Hi John, Yes, I've read ALL your posts w/ interest since the very beginning of when you started posting, and also all the replies you received ... I just don't post much, myself! :o) It would certainly be very rare (based on the stats I've read) for a person of your age to have Sjogren's, and as it has such an indeterminate cause (like Burning Tongue Syndrome) it makes sense to me that Sjogren's is psychogenic in the same way fibromyalgia would be. I had "dry eyes" when I was around your age and one doctor told me after some testing, that I had the tear production of an 80 year old! The "treatment" was artificial tears.
I do think the eye problems are related to my diagnosed "allergies" though (which I also consider psychogenic), but other than the "sinus" /tension /migraine headaches which I have had great success with, via Dr Sarno's method, I have been a little bit "stuck" in knowing what to work on next, (I have many other symptoms) and whether I should try to see a TMS doc, etc...
Anyway, the other day I did have ONE successful experience in getting my eyes to feel better so at least re the eyes I feel that one I will probably be able to work with successfully. However, I have had absolutely NO successes w/ my burning tongue yet! ZERO! and I have been working on that one for quite a while now, so not sure. I have just started reading Amir's book (after reading Sarno and Brady for months), and I think it has some ideas I will try. I've just been getting on with my life as the burning tongue symptoms are more irritating and an annoyance, rather than completely debilitating, like the headaches were ... but maybe if I treated the tongue issues the exact same way (ie with the same seriousness I was doing re the headaches and the journalling, etc) I would have more success. Mainly I've just been talking to my tongue. :o)
Anyway, I keep "challenging" my tongue (I just eat whatever I want) but it also just keeps hurting. I have noticed if I avoid certain foods, it doesn't hurt, but I don't think "avoidance" (ie keeping the conditioning going) is the answer, either. If I start having success with my tongue, I'll let you know! |

It's great how well you have done in the past with TMS equivilants. I hope you see the same success with the Burning Tongue syndrome. I have some questions:
Does your mouth feel dry? Is it hard to speak? What does your tongue look like?
Thanks a lot. |

John, you gotta get off this focus on the physical. ;)
RSR -- what you said about the tear production of an eighty-year-old reminded me of what a chiro said about my neck, that I had the smallest ROM he'd ever seen in someone so young (I was 25 at the time) and it was more like the ROM of a stiff sixty-year-old.
A few months later my ROM was totally normal without me doing any signficant stretching on it. The TMS gremlin can introduce the most extreme symptoms and then vanish them in practically the blink of an eye. It's nuts!
-- It's not 100% belief that's required, but 100% commitment. |

I know, I'm doing much better. I think you and I both know, it's easier said than done. |

Hi John, Does your mouth feel dry? - nope. Is it hard to speak? - nope What does your tongue look like? - pretty normal actually! Both the dentist and specialist said my tongue doesn't really show anything .. it just FEELS like it's burning!

Glad to hear it's otherwise normal because this is a very common symptom of B vitamin deficiency. Have you been tested? I assume any GP will have done the appropriate tests on someone presenting with burning toungue.
We all need to keep in mind Sarno's own warning to rule out the physical possibilities first. If anyone missed it, JimmyJimmy's cautionary tale on his missed vitamin deficiency should be kept in mind:

It was so long ago (a couple/few years ago now?) that I can't remember what tests I had, but I think I recall also trying B vitamin supplementation, which didn't help. Nothing that I have tried, has really helped at all, I don't think .. other than avoiding certain foods. Chewing gum provides some symptomatic relief when it's really bad.
Of probably more interest, is that I was actually officially diagnosed with Alexithymia several years previous to the burning mouth syndrome dx ! I didn't even know what it was, at the time. |
