When I go to see my psychiatrist, who I haven't opened up to that much yet, I feel very anxious, almost depersonalized or disconnected from my body at times. And then before I go and see him, I feel afraid that I am going to feel so weird. Does this sound like TMS trying to keep me from opening up to him....which keeps me from opening up to myself?

Hazer, it is natural to have fear to 1) tell others about ourselves, and 2) face things ourselves! I think #1 has to do with fear about what others will think of us, which I used to obsess about but realized that most people are involved in their own lives/issues and they are not spending time thinking stuff about me. Even better than that: I have grown past caring what others think!! LOL You are going this route for help, right? Well, their job is to help you, so start unloading! Or if you can't get past the discomfort, I would suggest your own therapy--write out your feelings! Best wishes for healing, -Lori |

I don't know if it is useful to classify this as "TMS". It is a natural response to the worries of exposing our inner thoughts to someone new, who might judge us. We get anxious and perhaps try to disconnect so that if the judging does happen, it will not touch us as much.
The lucky thing is that therapists are meant to hear our thoughts and not judge us, but help us. But it still takes time to trust them. Therapy is not always fun and it does feel risky to share so much with someone you have a professional relationship with.
Give yourself a break. You can even talk to the therapist about these feelings. I think they will tell you it's ok and normal.
