I have two questions:
1) When Dr.Sarno say to think Psychological, not Physical, does he mean:
a) to think about what is going on in your life, not about the pain or b) think about TMS theory (understanding a whole process of rage) and try to accept it into your unconscious mind, not about the pain
I just got confused after watching Dr.Sarno's tape...
2) The other question is about "talking to your brain". How do you do this? What do you say to your brain?
Thanks

Thinking psychologically means looking for a psychological reason for a TMS condition, as opposed to a physical one. For example, when my TMS pain started last year July I was convinced it was because I lifted a heavy boat part with one arm. However, when I later learned about TMS I realized that at the same time my pain started, I was extremely apprehensive about a trip I had to make to see a family member I didn't get along with.
I believe that talking to your mind (of which there are many examples on this forum) is telling your mind that you are aware that it is trying to distract your from some emotional issue by creating your TMS symptom. When your mind's strategy is defeated, the symptom goes away. Also you can order your mind to send oxygen to the affected area in order to stop the pain. |

Hi Toronto. I think the answer to question 1 is both your A and B.
I never watched the tapes...I'm just a book baby. But I always assumed "think Psychological" for 2 reasons
A.To retrain the Brain that you no longer need it's "assistance" with your problem and.. B.Eventually, with determination, you will begin to see a lot MORE places where you generate rage/anxiety by focusing on your thought patterns vs/external and internal stressors
as far as talking to your brain,I guess after a while you begin to make a distinction between what is YOU(conscious Toronto) and what is your TMS portion (Unconscious Toronto)
When I was recovering, let's say I had go to the Market and all of a sudden my conditioning/fear said "oh no,I can't do that because every time before we've been in pain lifting the bags"
I'd say to that Idea/brain "You know, you're so full of sh%t..I'm really sick of you following me around everywhere...I'm going to the market whether you like it or not, you're really not welcome ,but if you must come, come, but nobody here believes you any more...you're a liar and a coward...BYE"
I don't think Sarno gave too many examples because it sounds a little ridiculous...but I have no professional reputation to uphold,so I'll gladly tell you how foolish I was.... It worked....it sounds dumb, surely, but it worked.
peace

Thinking psychological: I agree with everything already said. In addition I will lieterally ask the question when I am experiencing pain...OK, what are you "feeling" (emotionally) right now. I will start with |

Thanks all for your replies. I am still new to all this, so it takes time to get involved completely into the TMS theory. I believe in theory, just need my unconcious mind to accept it. |
