 alexander technique?

hello - I have had 'RSI' ie tms for a while and been off work with it for nearly 1 and a half years, but after reading the mind-body prescription am starting to beat it back into submission (i am typing this - hurray) though the old unconscious is occasionally kicking up a fuss still.

I have - like everyone else - tried lots of different physical therapies, and have now stopped them all except alexander technique. I would quite like to carry on with it because I sing, and the physical / muscle tension I get interferes with this. Also a lot of alexander principles - such as focussing on enjoying activities for themselves, not focussing on the goal, seem compatible with Sarno's ideas.

However Alexander technique does mean, to some extent, focussing on the body - plus there are exercises you are meant to do in between lessons (which I haven't been doing). I truly believe that my physical problems stem from emotional sources but I think Alexander could be useful as a general tool for lessening stress and releasing tension.

Does anyone have any advice / experience with this? Has anyone used Alexander at the same time as following Sarno principles and found it to be compatible - or not compatible? Is it better to totally stop all physical ' therapy' type activities or is there room for something like this?

Any comments much appreciated.

I had Alexander lessons for poor posture - thought they were great and bought them for my wife and kids, now they still have great posture many years later. Years later I was still in pain, until doing Sarno's work. I took a break from all physical remedies until the pain went, including Alexander, yoga, etc. Once the pain is gone, doing anything physical is fine. This is my own experience and opinion only.

I think Alexander technique is great it itself, but I agree with altherunner -- if you have any trouble getting rid of the pain, then stopping anything physical that's meant to help with tension for a short while may be important.

I never tried the technique, but i think it is important to stop things like massage, chirporactic, pt etc since these just serve to boost your identification with an underlying physical cause.
