Reading his book, he uncovers the ego as an anger generating entity: "Inflation is the habit of imagining and acting as if the whole purpose of life was one's own aggrandizement and the fulfillment of one's own entitlements. This means bringing attention only to our own needs, demanding to be in control, believing we are entitled to be served by everyone and to have the ordinary conditions of existence repealed or relaxed for us because we are so special." next paragr.: "The neurotic side of the ego is not meant to be destroyed but, paradoxically, to be expanded in its healthy humility so that it can extend its creative possibilities to all our psyche. It is liberated by being relieved of its arrogance and then opened to its potential to show power FOR rather than OVER others." |

Hi Al,
That's really interesting. It seems to me that one of the challenges for many of us is to face the idea that we have this ego inside, because it doesn't fit with the image we want to have of ourselves, and by trying to deny the ego, rather than learning how to manage it, we feed TMS.
Some of us were taught from childhood that the ego feelings are bad and should be rooted out, but society has kind of swung the other way in recent generations, in an effort to improve our children's self-esteem, which has also created problems. If we can find the right balance, we stand a much better chance of avoiding TMS and teaching our children to lead lives that are balanced in terms of self-esteem and esteem of others. |
