 Is Tennis Elbow TMS?

I went to see Dr. Sarno in 1987 for back pain. His treatment and psychotherapy helped me rid myself of pain. I fit the classic profile of a TMS patient. In addition to back pain, I've had IBS, headaches and neck pain. Over the years I've also had tendonitis in various locations.

I was just diagnosed with tennis elbow which came on after returning to my exercise program of aerobics and yoga after a month in Europe. The doctors told me that it was because I hadn't done these activities for a month. It had dawned on me that this is probably another manifestation of TMS.

I'd like to hear from any other tennis elbow suffers on how they have connected this to TMS and how they recovered. I have a burning sensation in my right elbow which is worse upon awakening, and the muscle attached to the elbow is tender.

Hi Nikky,

I have never suffered from tennis elbow, but it does seem bizarre that aerobics and yoga would bring something like that on. It doesn't make sense.

Given your background with TMS, I would treat this as such and you will probably notice the pain will go away.

My default approach is to assume TMS, even when I have a hard time believing it 100 percent. With your history, this is very likely more TMS. I've had just about evry sort of tendonititis known to man I would say,including tennis elbow, with something new cropping up with depressing regularity seemingly evry month or so....

Since adopting the TMS approach, this has largely disappeared...

I can't speak for all cases of tennis elbow, but I know that I had a case of "tennis elbow" that I used TMS techniques on and it went away

Funny thing happend when playing softball. I'm what Sarno labeled as "Perfectionist" - of course the root of that problem is my childhood getting picked on as being stupid. Now I evolved into a person who never fails. Well I learned some humility.
Sunday I just got to a new ball field - smaller field where in my experience should smash the ball out each time. Well - my brain kicked in saying "YOU HAVE TO PERFORM - HIT HOME RUNS" .. After 4 throws up warm up! My elbow gave out - the pain was so horrible! I'm currently still in pain in my back, I just finished Sarno's video and learned a lot - and the pain moves around from back to right knee - and now the very arm I need to swing and throw.
The very next day the pain was gone.

Dr. Sarno talks about elbow pain at great length in Healing Back Pain. See pages 9, 10 and 117.

Thank you all for your replies. I e-mailed Dr. Sopher and he agreed that I have TMS. Also, I saw Dr. Schecter on Monday and after examining me and talking he also agreed--TMS!

Since I never had tennis elbow, even though Sarno writes about it, I needed proof and I got it. I'm writing in Schecter's workbook and seeing my psychoanalyist. When I visited Sarno in NY he said "be sure to see someone analytically trained." That's very important because this type of doctor understands repressed emotions and the mind-body connection.
