I've done this the last couple days whenever my pain starts to get on my nerves and I've found it to be quite effective.
The pain moves around always, all through my back, shoulders, and neck. Whenever I have pain, I hit myself in that area. It's a medium hit, not enough to bother someone with a "normal back" but the kind of hit that would be very painful to someone with a "bad back". I find that this not only punishes the unconscious for causing pain (Fred Amir) but also reinforces to my brain that I know the pain is psychosomatic. After all, if I really had a "bad back" I wouldn't be hitting myself like this.
I have lower GI pain and tried hitting myself in the butt today. I did it in the office and soemone saw me. Wicked embarrassing and try explaining that one. It didn't work anyway.

By hitting yourself on the area where you feel pain you are merely re-inforcing the idea that your pain is of a physical origin. This is counter-productive to overall recovery even if it provides temporary relief.
