Hello there
Im pete over in the UK! Ususal story dont know where to start! Found out about sarno about a year and a half ago. Has been a great comfort but sometimes i feel it may be a false comfort! Had a telelphone appoitment with Marc Sopher he was convinced it was tms. My problems are largely back and neck currently lower back with the occasional tingly foot!
Lots of pressure at the moment new job, marriage, house, short term contract. Find im at my wits end much quicker than i should be.
Any advice gratefully recieved. Hands up anyone who has got this tms thing to work! Im a lot more active just still in pain often!
Kind regards

Hi Pete and Welcome. I had increasingly worse right butt cheek pain and in November went to PCP first, then orthopedist. MRIs show herniated disc at L5 S1. Was in horrible pain though and tried phys therapy and drugs. Didn't work. In fact I HATED phys therapy. Then surgery was next on the agenda which scared me to death and made my pain worse. Then my sis in law brought me Dr. Sarno's books. Read them and asked someone to go get the ones I didn't have (could not go get them myself). I did believe what I had could be TMS: tingling, numbness in weird areas, and a lot of pain that moved around. Was I a perfectionist? Um, yeah. And the other criteria was met for the most part too. Called Dr. Sarno's office, he called me back and asked if I was ready to accept that this could be TMS and I said YES. Saw him, talked w/ him, etc. I have TMS. Yipee! Better than surgery! Took 1.5 weeks of doing the treatment plan he prescribes: various daily reading and A LOT of writing about issues that I realized were important or stressful or angering to me--current and in the past. The list in MBP book was good for me to see--sources of stress. Aging (#7 I think), hmm, hadn't thought about that one but was able to write PAGES about it and my anger that I'm not 20 anymore! But soon I could walk w/o pain, and sit! Sitting was the problem for 1.5 months; could not do it w/o bad pain in my butt. But here I am, 2 months later, pain-free. I have to say once I started feeling a bit better, it went away fast. Was back at work 2 weeks later. Sitting, bending, etc. So this treatment plan DOES work and I am happy to be proof!! The herniated disc in my back does not scare me; as Dr. Sarno says, it is gray hair of the spine. Most people over 20 do not have a "normal" spine. I did get a twinge of pain last week because of issues at work! Talked to myself, did writing, and there is no pain now. Hope this helps you and best wishes! -Lori |

Welcome, Pete;
Have had great success with Sarnosizing for years. During difficult periods in life (and other times, too) I've had flareups. I've found that I require more regular maintenance than some folks. It's not something I can do now and then. For me, it had to become a regular part of my life. I try for daily reading, writing, talking to (yelling at) brain, etc. Realistically, for maintenance I do it 3-5 times per week...more if I'm in a lot of pain/discomfort. But it absolutely does work for me. I try not to over-analyze the whole thing...just keep it simple and do it regularly. I even wrote down a mini version of how I could do a quickie no matter where I am. I continue to explore any little tricks to help retrain the old bean. Good luck to you! Vicki |

My advice, as always, is to continue to read the pyschology and treatment sections of Dr. Sarno's books and, in addition, read his "The Divided Mind" over and over again.
Since you have mentioned current stressors taking place in your life you may want to focus on them and write some of your thoughts down in a journal. What is it about you that causes your new job, marriage, house, short term contract to generate stress? Remember, it is not about the new job, marriage, house, short term contract per se, but is is some personality trait you possess that generates the inward stress, anger, worry etc that is causing the problem.
Are you a perfectionist? Do you seek approval from others? Are you sensitive to criticism, like me? Are you a dependent person? Do you set up standards for yourself (ie what it means to be a good employee or husband) which you cannot possibly live up to? Are you a worrier?
Think about some of these questions and journal about them or share with us on the board.
Best wishes.
Shawn
