Two months ago I fell and hurt my right shoulder. How long do these things take to heal? It still hurts. My fear is my brain will hijack the site as a TMS pain location, especially since it's my old carpel tunnel/rotator cuff spot. I feel aware of the secondary gains I get from the injury, but I'm anxious to resume activity safely. My yoga teacher suggests an MRI and PT, but I'm afraid that will fuel the TMS fire by keeping my thoughts structural, and I'm not sure when it's safe to stop thinking structurally. I'm still worried about making it worse with free weight lifting and yoga classes.

Long before I ever heard of TMS, I injured my shoulder in the gym, then made it worse with the decision to keep pushing through the injury, not letting it heal. Severe pain where the collar bone in front meets the shoulder got so bad I couldn't even sleep on it.

Tried a cortisone injuction which didn't do much. A surgeon told me I would have to have my acromium joint removed, that nothing else would work. I rejected that. What did work was stopping using it in the gym, period. Did a lot of iceing. But mostly just rest, meanwhile taking NSAIDS for the pain, until it slowly but surely healed, which took well over a year.

Had I known about TMS then, I'm sure I would have worked on that as well, as it was no doubt one component, at least, of the problem. In retrospect, had I taken some time off when I first hurt it, it probably would have been a 3-week problem.

Dear Rebecca,

I think yoga and TMS thinking can work together, after all the definition of yoga is to yoke the mind and the body. In the yoga tradition there are healing practices for injuries. Since your yoga teacher is recommending MRI and PT I assume she does not feel competent to guide you through the asanas to heal your injury. If you want to persue the yoga therapy route, seek out a senior teacher who is trained in it. Perhaps your teacher knows of a senior teacher she can refer you to.
