I just realized that when I get a new symptom that I atuomatically, and probably somewhat unconsciously begin to beat myself up over it, like it is somehow my fault. Once I became aware of this process, I realized that this approach I take is probably contributing to the pool of rage that causes tms in the first place.

I then remembered the 3rd step in Sarno's treatment strategy: "Accept the pyschological explanation and all of the ramifications as NORMAL for healthy people in our society"

I think if I can implement this part of the strategy that will help me get rid of the last bit of tms that I have left.

So its just a thought that might help some of you or might not. How are you treating yourself when you get a symptom? Are you approaching yourself with truthful but compassionate acceptance, or are you beating yourself up some of these things that you have no control over??

I feel I'm at a similar stage-
when I get flare ups I got very worried quickly
which can only contribute.And I self-criticize.

Nice point.
I think it's another fairly critical aspect of TMS.
How you mentally approach getting a 'relapse' of pain has been critical to me in how long the pain will linger.
I used to beat myself up a lot whenever I 'overdid it' and I'm getting better and better at just taking absolutely no notice of pain signals after doing triggering activities.

If I can't ignore it(ie find a better distraction) then I will focus on psychological and trying to do it that way, but I'm always more successful if I don't dwell on it physically or psychologically.

It can be very devastating once you spiral down into that guilt/depression/I did it again/stupid me type feelings. With practice, you definitely can learn not to spiral down into that place anymore. The more you do it the more you understand that yes, TMS is created by our brain!

For me it's about focus, if I start focusing on the pain and thinking about it & the associated guilt, that's the point at which I have to make an effort not to dwell on it and have it go away rapidly. If I don't it can last for days/weeks...etc....

Related to this interesting topic - did any of you take it a stage further, as I did? Some time after I began to recover, with a lot of hard work, I too had relapses that I beat myself up about, but sometimes I would find myself dealing with a difficult, stressful situation and my brain would start to chatter - along the lines of - 'Watch out, you're stressed, you'll bring on your TMS!'

Sure enough - the back pain, IBS, whatever ...... would rear an ugly head. The link was blatant.

Mind you, I think it actually helped reiforce the confidence I was developing in the TMS diagnosis.

AnneG,

Yes! The brain chatter is what I wish I could control. I am doing the same thing you are. I start to tell myself "Oh, no, I'm really feeling stressed" about whatever it is and then "Oh, I'm going to start getting dizzy again" and sure enough I do. Yesterday I was feeling particularly stressed out and hadn't been experiencing any dizziness really at all. My IBS has been more of a problem lately and when it's not the dizziness and IBS, my back hurts. Also, I broke my toe a little over a week ago and am quite fixated on it, as the doctors tell me that they will be rechecking it on October 12th and if it doesn't look like it's healing properly I will require surgery that entails putting pins in my toe. (OUCH!!!) Well, just like you I started thinking "Wow, I'm really feeling stressed out" and when I laid on the couch I felt dizzy. It is truly amazing what our brains can do to us.

Dear Laura,

I was looking around for your post, asking about where I got the John Stossel tapes from. I came across a post of yours, from a few days ago about your broken toe. It said you are having a re-check, to see, if you need pins for your broken toe. It sounds like your doctor has already set your mind up for potential surgery. I've never broken a bone in my life, knock on wood, but I can't, for the life of me, fathom how a broken toe would have complications. Those must be really tiney pins the foot doc must use to fix it.

Sarno says, a broken femur, the largest bone in the body, heals in 30 days and becomes stronger. If your foot doc reccommends surgery for your toe, I would get a few more opinions. Maybe you'll be needing a new doc, as well as a new dentist. I have a diabetic cat and, since his diagnosis about two years ago he has been examined by about 15 different vets. None have taken any offence that I have gone for 2nd and 15th opinions, in fact the vets consult with each other. The bottom line, on my Pumokin is, that I have learned a lot about feline diabetes, but no vet has cured his diabetes. He's just an old cat. But I have spent $20,000, and feel confident that I have exhausted everything that vetrenary medicine can do for him. I'll quit caging him off to vets and let him enjoy his senior years at home, suning himself, in my beautiful backyard with his tabby, girlfriend, SportySpice.

Back, to your question, about, where I got my John Stossel video from. It's been several years, but I either ordered directly from ABC News or Burrelle's(sp?)News Transcript Service(?). The feature aired on 7/25/99, on the ABC NEWS 20/20 show. It is pretty good. I also have a CNN LARRY KING LIVE show on "Back Pain" that aired on 8/12/99. Transcripts of programs usually cost about $25. I also have a video I ordered from Dr. Schechter's website, www.mindbodymedicine.com. It has an interview with him on it.

The tapes are helpful, but they don't say anything that is not in the Good Doctor's books already.

I would be happy to dub them, if someone out there, knows how to link them to this website and stream them. They're between 15 and 20 minutes each. I don't know the details about copyright stuff. If Dave could figure out how to stream them to the site I would contribute some cash to help with the cost.

Cheers,
tt
