I am moving this to the top as it has clips from the most recent Oprah show on "The Secret" See:

really intesting video, thanx

But ... is following the 'law of attaction', principles a little contradictory to Sarno as it states that just 'thinking' about negative emotions (fear, sorrow, etc) will attact negativity in our lives ??? TMS says that recognizing dangerous emotions is the key to break the chronic pain cycle and get back to a normal life.

Does feeling one's anger attract negativity in one's life ? Not very Sarno-ist.

Despite that, I find the concept appealing.

Thanks for posting that link, Shawn. I just watched the whole thing of an hour and a half. What it says around minute 100 about Stress being the root of all dis-ease makes it very relevant to TMS. Unfortunately, TMS tends to keep us mired in negative thoughts and feelings such as fear, anger, depression instead of gratitude, forgiveness, and love. It urges us to take responsibility for creating a better life for ourselves by changing our thoughts and attitudes, just like Dr. Sarno does.

It reminds me of the DVD, What the Bleep do we know?, and ties in with two books I've recently read by Deepak Chopra; Quantum Healing, and The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire: Harnessing the Infinite Power of Coincidence, in which he talks about the power of our thoughts, and about attention and intention, as well as many other powerful ideas.

Anyway, I really enjoyed it, and it was very inspiring. Thanks,
Ralph

Flybynite: that's a very good point you make. I've been pondering this myself.

We know Sarno works. And we know LOA works (at least many of us do). And yet they seem to contradict each other.

LOA says that if you focus on the negative feeling (repressed anger) etc, then you'll draw to yourself more of the same.

Maybe the answer is that it's not the ANGER itself that's causing the pain, but the repression. You may well draw more anger to you by examining anger, but that in itself won't cause your TMS to worsen, unless you repress it.

If you got the message of the movie you would see that what is perpetuating the pain it thinking about it all the time. Remember, as the movie said, thoughts become things, and we empower that which we resist. It is so obvious is my life that this is true. Using the ideas in this tape, one can argue that support groups to overcome pain - such as this board- actually perpetuate the problem.

I have to say FlyByNight brings up an interesting point, about the contradiction of LOA and Sarno-ism, but I think its resolved with this.

I think recognizing that we have anger, or fear or whatever, acknowledging it, and then MOVING ON is the key to not spending much time with negative emotions.

Sometimes at work when my TMS would flare up, I would say "gee, I wonder what Phsychological stress I'm under today? " and usually give it a couple seconds of thought, and then move on, as my work was compelling. I think this acknowledgement was all that was needed, and yet I didn't spend much time there.

I also really enjoyed "What the Bleep"

Love this thread !

Well said, Beth. As baseball65 would say, "Let go".

I really enjoyed this movie. Thank you for posting it. The point about focusing on the medical problems REALLY hit a nerve with me. I was just thinking not long ago really how I dwell on the anxiety issues I have and they don't seem to go away and that maybe if I focused more on getting better and not having anxiety over everything that it would actually improve. I guess it's time to put it to the test. I also bought a book recently that goes into how our thoughts shape our life and I have been working on that a bit so it's come at just the time I needed it to reinforce that process.

I bought this DVD last night and watched it. I'm not sure how it contradicts Sarno. I found it extremely worthwhile, and plan to share it with my family and friends.

It confirms alot of what Monte talked about in our consultation. Sarno says you must forget about the pain and move on. But we all have focused on, think about, and feel our pain, so we get more of it. At least I have, and have been frustrated that I haven't made as much progress as I'd hoped. But why? Maybe because it was the only thing I was thinking and feeling about!

The law of attraction movie is wonderful....
many of us have probably known about alot of these laws...
but it is always so amazing to me how depending on where we are in our lives affects what we "let in"....
i really think that having experienced the "healings" and thought shifts through TMS allows me to accept the LOA even more...on a deeper molecular level where it needs to be in order to really change our perceptions and behaviors...
i am so grateful for the link that was posted to THE SECRET movie...
thank you thank you thank you

I am continuing on this journey we call life and discovering new wonders daily. Good health and abundance to all of you!

OMG! I was hoping there would be talk about The Secret on this forum. I saw the Oprah show regarding The Secret and immediately purchased the DVD. So far I don't believe it is contradictory to what Sarno says...I believe it's a great message of how to just 'do it' and to take more accountability for what we 'get out' of life...I think it's great! Us TMSers focus on something not perfect or something that's going wrong and obsess, but have a hard time of just getting beyond it or changing it because we want things to be perfect or we worry about how it will affect others (I'm making a generalization don't bite my head off). Hopefully the DVD will be waiting for me in my mailbox today and then I can come back and report on it or just join in on this topic.
