I am new to this forum and Sarno's theories, and I was just wondering how people in this forum were diagnosed with TMS. Were you diagnosed by a physician? Self-diagnosed? I believe my pain was caused by an injury, not by repressed anger. Can any type of chronic pain condition be categorized as TMS and cured by Sarno's techniques? |

Welcome to the forum! I read about Dr.Sarno in a book about alternatives to neck and back surgery.I read "Healing Back Pain", and felt better immediately. I had a relapse, and had 4 therapy sessions on the phone with Don Dubin. I have been pain free for at least a year. I believe most chronic pain is tms, or related, set off by an event. Information is the key. Get well! |

Hi mps,
Self diagnosed with TMS.
I had LBP and other equivs for 20 years and lots of regular docs. Sometime after my first MRI, someone on another forum suggested Dr. Sarno's HBP book. A couple years later I finally got the book, and was instantly convinced the moment I read it. It took me 6 months to recover 75%, and another 3 years to be 99%. Then of course I ran into the TMSHelp Forum here a few years ago, way cool.
Never saw a TMS doc.
How about you? What's your story?
Take care, -Stryder |

I, like you, am new to Sarno's work. My question for you all is how did you gain support from friends and family for this diagnosis? I have been having trouble convincing my spouse that this is valid, and that I want to try to heal by focusing on the emotional. |

pain can start with an injury and then easily morph into TMS. The brain finds a way to keep you obsessed with the pain so that you don't deal with the mental stuff.
I self-diagnosed myself after reading the book and applying the principles. I am 99% pain free.

Self-Diagnosed and TMS physician-confirmed. It wasn't difficult for me to be convinced that my constant slew of various 'ailments' (and failures to get well after seeing many specialists and having various treatments, taking prescription drugs, etc.) over the last 12 or so years were TMS.

Turtle23, John Stossel of 20/20 couldn't even persuade his brother, a doctor, of the validity of TMS after he himself was cured by Dr. Sarno. And we know what a skeptic John Stossel usually is. You and your spouse can watch the 20/20 segment here:

Turtle - Don't expect support from your family for your belief in the TMS concepts. My parents and my wife are stuck in the structural mode of thinking (even though they have seen my amazing progress in defeating sciatica by using Sarno's concepts), but my brother has accepted the ideas to a large degree. Don't try to convince anybody. It's your life and your pain and you can only control your own thoughts and actions. "You can take a horse to water, but you can't make him drink." |

mps, I was self-diagnosed. If you have TMS, your pain could start with an injury, but TMS grabbed on to that and kept it going. Sarno says a real injury that was treated and rested (eg a broken bone set, or ankle wrapped, iced, and rested) should heal in a few days, weeks, or, for something very serious, a few months.

mps - don't know what your pain is, but remember you must rule out anything serious before self diagnosing, but most of the time, it's nothing serious. Welcome.
turtle - you have found your support here. Main stream medicine is so deeply ingrained in our culture, and there are lots of nefarious industries who have a large financial interest in keeping it that way. Main stream medicine supports the Diagnose - Perscribe Drugs - Perform surgery model. I worked at a hospital for years and the two big revenue departments were Pharmacy and Surgery. Welcome to the forum.
