Just when I thought I had this TMS thing licked, it seems to be rearing it's ugly head again. My very thoughtful husband surprised me with a wonderful bike trip to France this fall along with a new road bike. I have been trying to ride, but get very sore the day after. I know my husband wants me to push through the pain and I wonder if resent him for this ? Just asking the question makes me think that I am not really enjoying this activity and am doing it for the wrong reasons. A need to please perhaps ? |

Have you been out of the country before? Do you fear flying? Ever been to France? Have too many things at home to worry about? Part of old programming coming back? Was there somewhere else or something else you had hoped your husband would do or buy besides this?
Oh and congratulations for overcoming part of the TMS, I am still new to the process. Those were just the initial questions that came to mind because I would assume things behind any of them could trigger that inner child (fear, anger, worry, selfishness). I hope this helps!

Hi Ali Cat, I do travel a fair bit, and just returned from France a week ago. Not sure what my fears are. Possibly,I may feel that I will not measure up to my husband's expectations for cycling. Low self-esteem ? I am also leaving behind an elderly parent suffering from dementia. Lot's to work through and organize before I go I encourage you to persevere and keep up with the work needed to conquer TMS. It's a life altering experience ! Thanks Nora

|

Hi Nora, Is it TMS type back pain or just being sore from riding? You mentioned you were sore the next day and I wasn't sure if it was from just doing a different or new physical activity.
If it's back pain, than you are asking yourself the right questions. Perhaps you don't really enjoy biking and don't want to disappoint anyone. Only you can answer that. But if that's the case, you could always try thanking your husband but telling him that you don't want to do that activity. Not because of the pain but just because you don't really enjoy it. If you do that and the pain leaves, you'll have your answer.
I've been getting a lot of lower back pain from weight training but that is something I really love so I knew part of the problem was the fear of hurting myself. And sure enough, most times I would hurt when I weight trained. But I didn't let that stop me because I love it. If you don't feel like that about biking, than don't do it. But make sure you give it up for the right reasons, not because of fear of TMS.
Hope that makes some sense.
Regards,
Jay |

I'm an avid road biker and have had bouts of TMS that I've licked so I thought I would give you a suggestion or two. First of all I think it's highly likely that these episodes of pain are TMS induced for the psychological factors you have mentioned. However it is not unheard of to get pain after cycling if you're not used to it, and/or if your bike doesn't fit you properly, especially over long distances.
You mentioned the bike was a gift--are you sure it fits you properly? Bike shops with experience fitting people have all kinds of ways to make sure your position is optimized to avoid pain. It's worth it to get checked out. The other thing that can cause pain is having a visor on your helmet and having to extend your neck to see over it. Remove the visor and keep neck neutral.
Finally, don't overdo it! You have to build up your distance gradually. If you are not used to riding a bike, going out for 50 miles on your first ride will definitely hurt you! I suggest you build up gradually using time, rather than distance as your guide. Start out with 45-60 minutes and build your way up to 3 to 4 hours at at time.
I know these tips are more physical than psychological, but I have seen too many new people to the sport of cycling get turned off of it because they didn't get introduced to it properly. You don't need to have TMS to resent a spouse for pushing you too hard too fast on a bike that doesn't fit properly!
Finally I think if you take care of these and still have pain, you can be sure it's your TMS coming back for another ride (forgive the pun) and you can explore the psychological aspects that you have mentioned.
Good luck and bon voyage.
