My neurologist told me to read Sarno about a year ago...I saw myself on every page. I made some progress...but I guess I gave up. My problem is leg pain. I was told I have arthritis in my hips. That diagnosis never made a lot of sense to me. Why would my hips be worn out at 55 ? I'm not an athlete...not mobidly obese...my bones are ok. Also most of the pain is in the muscles of my legs...not really in the joints.I used to be able to walk for hours...now I don't if I could walk a mile without considerable effort.
I am going back to the book. Does anyone know of a Sarno therapist or doctor in Western Massachusetts?
In one of the strings I read about someone saying that after reading about a football player's bad knees he experienced pain at 12. I think that my troubles began when I was caring for my aging father. At time I would feel as though most of my life was over...that I was old at 50..I began to limp like my mother...and began to have problems walking. To me this screams SARNO...why is it that the knowing isn't enough. He said once you realize what is going on, you should be getting better. I feel I must be doing something wrong. Any thoughts?

Jackie,

When I first read the book I was also keen, but also gave up because I got the impression I should get better straight away.

I went back to it later and was really determined to give it a proper try, but even then it took a couple of months before I noticed a difference. So I would encourage you to persevere. Many people take longer than it implies in the book.

If you can see a TMS therapist then even better – it’s hard to do it without help or encouragement.

Here’s my story:

jackie,
It took me a year and a half of persistently doing the work. I have NO PAIN now after 12 years of excruciating sciatica. Sarno's 'cure' works - it really does

Don't put yourself on some sort of timetable for recovery, that is counter productive. It could take weeks, months or years, it all depends on how long it takes your mind to unlearn the bad habits and programming.

The good news is that you are on the right track. Your pain is real, but it is being caused by your repressed anger.

Take care, -Stryder

Thank you for the encouragement. I gave up because I thought all that I had to do was know where the pain was coming from to make it disappear. I didn't realize that it could take a while. This has been getting steadily worse for about eight years...I supposed it is deeply rooted. Hilary mentioned headaches...I've got those too...I never made the connection. The weird part of this is that if I think about it, my pain reflects pain of other people I have know. example...years ago an older friend was saying that she couldn't seem to walk very far...her legs just wouldn't work. At the time I thought...what does she mean ? Now 30 years later that inconsequential conversation has come back to me as I feel the same way. I never had a headache in my life...I became friendly with a person who suffered migraines. After I suffered a virus that caused a severe headache I began to fear headaches and guess what...I have been having migraines for about 10 years. Thank you again for your encourgement.
