The new pain I have been experiencing over the last couple of weeks has been this awful stabbing pain in my kidney area of the back. I have no idea if this is a new TMS area or a kidney stone. I have recently come off powerful steroids and eat a diet high in protein. Has anyone had a kidney stone? The pain almost winds me at times. I am only 34 which I thought was too young - however I am wondering if the medication could cause this side affect.
Suz-I work with two guys that have had kidney stones. They are terribly painful and can be seen on a mri. The duration for both guys was about 3 days. Both could feel it moving and found it during urination. From my viewing, the pain was totally debilitating. Boyh guys were nauseated and totally unable to function.
Thank you Susie for that info. It really helped. I don't think one would have pain on and off for weeks. Last night it was really bad and so I sat down to look at Kidney stone info on the internet - I was so engrossed in my computer that before I knew it I was no longer in pain! - classic TMS! This morning, the pain is no longer there but is back in my sciatica again - although a little milder than normal. This is very interesting - it has to be TMS. What is so amazing is how excruciating this TMS pain can be - Dr. Sarno talks about how painful oxygen deprivation to the muscles and nerves is - hence the immediate tendancy to assume it is something awful. I have also noticed that I am having very vivid dreams about my ex in-laws - I guess I am really confronting stuff right now and my unconscious is trying to protect me by causing the pain. I actually see this as weird progress!
I can't speak from experience, but if you were on steroids for a long time there are many possible side-effects. I assume your doctors properly weaned you off them gradually; if you stop them too suddenly there are potentially serious complications.
Just to be sure you should get checked out. It sounds like TMS, but we also shouldn't lose sight of the fact that real things can happen in our bodies.
I agree Dave. That was the problem - I came off them far too quickly and suffered terrible adrenal problems. I was on dexamethason for 6 weeks - far too long for such a potent drug. I felt awful afterwards and am finally feeling like myself again after seeing a wonderful naturopathic doctor. If the pain comes back in my back again, I might go and have it checked out - always better to be safe than sorry. I am just a bit sick of doctors.
