I have enjoyed this forum very much and appreciate the insights here. Although I thought I had a robust critque of the big pharma-physician mess in this country, Sarno has revolutionized my thinking. I now grudgingly admit that alternative medicine like herbs, yoga and massage can be as much a crutch as pharmaceuticals. (I do use yoga as a way to access anger and rage, so I guess that is not a crutch.) I am constantly amazed at how much resistance Sarno is engendering...and hope that his thinking will spread as fast as possible. Maybe insurance companies will find out about him someday....

Anyway, I had a question. As I read Sarno, I can't help but think of Jesus and his miraculous cures in the New Testament. I suspect that he was an early Sarno practitioner of sorts. Anyone else had those thoughts?

Again thanks for an excellent and very important forum.

Fred

Well, this post is most likely going to get shut down. But I have tied some things Sarno talks about that are biblical. What Sarno talks about our childish desires in the unconscious reminds me of Paul talking about our flesh. We all have a conflict going in oursleves. Asl oin the bible it does say that people suffer because of their lack of knowledge. Well, with TMS we do suffer because of the lack of knowledge of what is TRULY causing the pain.

Like you said this will probably get shut down but . . .

It is funny I was just thinking of this yesterday from a biblical perspective, and came to the conclusion that the id (child) is equivalent to the flesh, the super-ego (parent) is like the law (i.e. written on our hearts or the Spirit of God), and the ego (adult) is our own mind or spirit, choosing between the two.

As far as the miraculous cures of Jesus, I have been thinking of that also. Here the "doctor" truly loves the "patient" (to the point of dying for him/her). (Of course he is God incarnate too.)

I know this is not a theological forum, but love goes a long way.
I think this lends a lot to the emotional pain we all suffer, and the ill effects it can have, as Sarno goes through great lengths to point out, and Candace Pert and others reaffirm.

All is not as it seems . . .

Love is very important. We should love ourselves unconditionally, unselfishly. This means accepting the emotions that we have. The bible also teaches that "the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak." Sarno's book has a poem of a similar tone. Anyway, I believe that love os critical, and if God is "love" then God is critical, too. I am trying to love myself as a part of healing tms. It's funny how it almost feels wrong to really love yourself. I don't really know how to do it.

I like your theory on the id, and the ego, etc. I had thuoght up something very similar.

Special another good point. I think religion can play a part in TMS. I have always been pretty hard on myself. If I messed up and thought I am bad, I need to be punished etc. I was never taught to forgive myself, just how to punish myself. Special One, I don't really know how to love myself, I just know how to point out the wrong.
