After running across this term at the library and reading today I think I have found the cause of my pain. My question is where do I start to learn I have seen several books and videos available my Dr. Sarno where do I start? I am really in no good financial way to spend a ton of money on everything and I am in Indiana so far away from Dr. Sarno....where is best to start to read and figure out if this is my problem. THANKS

Hi dawn1973,

I agree with JohnD. Read The Mindbody Prescription first which is the good doctor's 3rd book.

Then when you are done, read it a couple more times. Post any questions you have as replies in your post here and someone will jump in and help you out.

If you want to then compare notes with Sarno's 2nd book read Healing Back Pain.

If you can check out the video lecture(s) from the library by all means do so.

Take care, -Stryder

I used a combination of Healing Back Pain and Mindbody Prescription. I preferred Healing Back Pain, as the psychology section in Mindbody Prescription is a tough read. Which book to use is can depend upon the situation, as Mindbody Prescription has more up-to-date info on some disorders. What are your diagnoses?

Ihave been suffering now for 1yr with chronic daily low back pain that has radiated as referred Right side sciatica and pilaformis syndrome. My right leg will constantly just ache in no pinpoint spot of course I am told by physicains, PT etc..that that comes form the back although now I am wondering if it isnt more "in my head" 1 1/2 years ago I had bariatric surgery the pain started after losing the 1st 100# and then progressed I am now down 200# but wondering if that is why I have some underlaying emotion as I have been heavy my entire childhood and adult life until now.

Dawn1973,

Here's a summary of how the two books (Healing Back Pain and The Mindbody Prescription) compare for the things you mentioned:

Sciatica
Sciatica is mentioned in both books.

Pyriformis syndrome
This syndrome is mentioned only in The Mindbody Prescription. Dr. Sarno says that he considers pyriformis syndrome to be psychological in origin, just like most back pain. This might be a reason for you to choose The Mindbody Prescription, although his discussion of this syndrome is brief.

Obesity and bariatric surgery
Obesity and bariatric surgery are not mentioned in either book. In this forum, there has been some discussion about whether over-eating is a "defense" (distraction) against repressed emotions, just like chronic pain is often a defense. If so, this could explain why your chronic pain began after your ability to eat was restricted surgically. Again, this idea is coming from patients here, not from Dr. Sarno.

Hope this helps,

Jim
