I am new to the forum and have read many of the topics. I believe reading HBP and MBP have helped me about 50% with my back (sciatica) and shoulder pain.
My story is long and I don't have much time with a 4 year old and a 5 week old right now to tell all. But, I have been suffering for about 2 years and have tried every treatment known to man, short of surgery. I am a RN in the ICU. I am 90% convinced of Sarno's thoery. I think my medical background inhibits me somewhat.
I have received a lot of insight through the forum, especially Dave's advice.
I find it very difficult to keep my mind off any my ailing body parts. I continually try to self diagnose. I have become somewhat of an "expert" with backs and shoulders and am well versed in the medical lingo and structures of both. Ignorance is bliss. Wish I didn't know what I know when it comes to my back and shouder discomfort.
I have dealt with mild to moderate depression and mild anxiety in the past. Right now I say I have mild depression and mild anxiety. I find life somewhat stressful. Feel like I can't keep up with everything (although I am a bit of a procrastinator)
I keep reading Sarno's books everyday and try my best to keep my mind off of my physical self. |

Welcome Tanya
I hope you find help and healing for your condition. Having little ones and working as a professional is hard to find any time with your self. , Especially if you are a single Mom. This is probably one of your major contributors to your condition.
In short these are your points that will keep you from looking at the emotional side as well as programmed into falling back into faith and practice of the mainstream medical community.* quote: * I find it very difficult to keep my mind off any my ailing body parts. Applying Sarno’s work for your physical pain should be relative easy for you once you are %100 confident and except the diagnosis, However dealing with depression and anxiety is going to be harder on your part of changing your mindset, expectations and looking at things in a new perspective. Once you have refreshed Your outlook and start to look within yourself, who knows possibly even up, you will have victory over any reason TMS wants to become a distraction.
This takes time and TMS is very sneaky as well as a controlling Bastard, so stay on course, it is a journey as well as a life-changing event. You will do just fine if you stay POSITIVE through your journey. You WILL get to your destination as long as you believe where you are going is really there.
Always Hope For Recovery

Thanks Kenny for your support. It's good to talk to people who believe in TMS. The majority of my friends are nurses and doctors and I believe they would feel I was a nut if I spoke to them about my "problem" with TMS.
I accept all the help I can get. |

And if you try gain confidence to be reinforced by them on what you are doing regarding TMS, you will only be confused by the mainstream approach, frustrated trying to convey your belief and new found discovery. This is your work and condition .The family that will support, you will need to reach out to. That’s why you’re here. In a similar situation I have been through the rough in and out side of the Autistic community, any time I mention bio medical approaches, heavy metal toxicity, vaccinations, and new acquired behavior modification, I get the rolling of the eyes and a heated debate. Simple things such as body assimilation, to unnatural substances (dyes, preservatives ect), and food intolerance’s are not even excepted and don’t want to be discussed as a protocol.
It is harder when you know the “Truth” about what is going on, that’s what put my TMS over the edge. But it is the same “ Truth that will set us free” and bring healing. Always Hope For Recovery

Almost everyone with TMS initially goes back and forth between “is it structural” or “is it TMS.”
May I suggest that you reread pages 105 to 119 of Chapter 5 and all of Chapter 6 of Healing Back Pain. Dr. Sarno discusses various physical conditions most of which are TMS but a few may be either TMS or structural. His recommendation is to try the TMS solution. If it works, then clearly it was TMS.
I further suggest that you read and reread Dr. Sarno’s book for a month. As you read, tell yourself repeatedly that “the pain will go away.” Your subconscious mind is listening. The idea is to convince your subconscious that the pain is not structural but emotionally induced (TMS).
Be of good cheer. Dr. Sarno claims that thousands have recovered. I can’t dispute him. I am one of them.
You will find that this is a great and helpful forum.

Tanya, Re-reading Dr.Sarno's books is helpful. I would also suggest Fred Amir's Rapid Recovery From Back and Neck Pain. Amir has alot of good ideas on how to practice Sarno's treatment on a day to day basis. Some of Amir's suggestions and his personal story might bring you closer to cementing your belief in TMS. The most important part of TMS recovery I have found is not to give up! I remind myself, the theories and principles of Sarno clicked with me for a reason, because I know for me, they are true. Good Luck. |

I leave for vacation on Thurday, armed with a brand new copy of Fred Amir's book and Dr. Schechter's workbook. All I have to do now, is find something to occupy my children with, find a beach chair, and do what I do best...sit around! It is a shame that they haven't invented a remote control for the sound of waves crashing on the shore. Oh well. I too have healed myself, and look forward to the new battle with my subconscious in its never ending quest to distract me from my deeply buried rage. Wish me luck! One more thing, does anyone know if any of the standard reading material is available on audio tape? Good luck to all! |

Thanks Kenny for having such insight and paying such close attention to what people say.
Have had a few episodes of being pain free. Good News. Have ordered Frank Amir's book. Looking forward to reading it. It's great to converse with people who understand and care. |
