I have been doing really well on my TMS work with the help of this forum, journaling, and reading. I am back to most of my previous activities (I completed a sprint triathlon last weekend) but I still struggle with sitting in cars. I assume it is conditioning but I always begin to doubt the TMS diagnosis after the pain arrives. My husband thinks it is because I focus so much on thinking about it when I am sitting (a lot of time to think about it). I am going to Thailand next week and am trying to come up with some strategies for the plane trip. If anyone has had similar problems with sitting and success with getting rid of the conditioning please share them with me.
Thanks to everyone that place post here. I don't post often but I read everything faithfully throughout the day.

My conditioning is sitting, too. I can barely tolerate any time spent in my car. Is you trip a business trip or vacation? I find that when I am going on a trip and it's vacation, the plane trip can be 6 hours long and I'm able to sit without pain. This is the only time I'm able to sit pain-free. But there have been times the plane trips have not been vacation-related and just the fact that I'm not going to be home, with the daily routine and regular stresses, the trip had been pain-free or very pain-reduced. It proves to me over and over that my conditioning is sitting and my pain is from TMS and nothing else.

I just returned home from work, a 1 1/2 hour drive, and the entire drive was horrific. Going to work was as bad. A week ago, I was in a car for 5 hours going on vacation, and my pain was barely annoying. Coming back, it was OK to start, but as we got closer to home, it intensified.
Go figure. TMS, quite the smart-ass.

Scout,

This was one of my biggest conditionings to break. It came right along with the first phase of pain reduction after reading MBP MOBP and MBC.I learned why I couldn’t sit then, I would TEST myself in sitting for longer periods of time, but ONLY when I was already RELAXED. See I was already conditioned to feel guilty when it was time to relax, that is why sitting was so difficult. But I did NOT force my self to sit when I was already in pain. Now this takes time like any habit-breaking pattern. First I believed I would be able to sit again, then I had pain reduction to be able to sit while I was working on WHY? I had the pain in the first place. Then sitting periods became longer and I began to ENJOY being able to sit and RELAX when I sit, this is what sitting is for, to be able to get off your feet for a bit.


Below is what I posted on the old board with a similar question.


I have been conditioned not to be able to sit for over 20 years. This was for periods longer than 20 minuets.

I would be in pain for three days if I ever woke up in the morning and took an hour to two-hour car ride.

It is only recently the last 5-6 months am I able to sit again, and it is no longer a timed or a conditioned response.

I have thrown out all my back toys, done the TMS work and as far as sitting, I am learning to RELAX again. …………………. (Boy it feels good to sit again)

MY PHSICAL THERIPIST TOLD ME TO TROW OUT MY NEW RECLINER
“IT’S NO GOOD FOR YOUR POSTURE”

O YEA!! I JUST BOUGHT THEM AND DIDN’T EVEN PAY FOR EM YET AND I DESERVE TO FINIALLY RELAX FOR OVER 20 YEARS.

If I am not comfortable I get up and find another chair that is more comfortable. I don’t force myself to sit nor do I fight back at the TMS pain.
