Greetings!

I'm new to this forum but definitely not new to pain. I've had fibromyalgia for 20 years and am currently off work on disability leave with "coccyxdynia". I've been to numerous doctors who can't figure out why it's taking a bruised tailbone so long to heal. I keep telling them I'm also having rectal spasms (sorry to be graphic) but they've all sort of ignored that important fact. I can't list all the drugs I've tried, mostly with horrible side effects.

Anyway, I'm hopeful TMS might be my problem as I've explored so many other options and possibilities that I'm exhausted from searching. I've ordered Dr. Sarno's books which should be here shortly.

In the meantime, I just wanted to say hi, and although I'm sorry you're all suffering, it's good to be in good company.

Hello,

I was diagnosed with Coccydynia many times. Dr. Sarno diagnosed me with TMS. Thank goodness! You'll see Coccydynia mentioned in The MindBody Prescription.

I know all too well the rectal muscle spasms and the medications, etc. I think it's worse than the back pain for some people, which I've also had. I was also diagnosed with about 5 other things, Fibro, too.

I will try to find the links I have on this rectal spasm / TMS issue.
You can email me if you like.

Shadytalks,
Welcome to the TMS Board! What you describe is exactly what brought me to Dr. Sarno, his wonderful books and this forum. After practically loosing my mind with pain...thinking that I never heard of anyone having anything like this....searching the web for any information about any painful condition involving this area of the body (most of what I read was pretty frightening and depressing)....being seen by three different doctors, having an MRI and a CT Scan....with no answers and no relief...I was at my wits end when I was given "Healing Back Pain" by Sarno...I saw myself on every page...however I didn't see my exact problem until I started "Mindbody Prescription"....and there on page 58, second paragraph from the bottom it was described....I did what Dr. Sarno suggested and my pain went slowly away....I know this will happen for you also! Give it your best shot... refuse to think that the pain is caused by anything structurally wrong....this is hard...talk to your mind....it feels weird at first but stick with it....this will work!
You are on the right path...we will be rooting for you....and keep us posted!

Hi Shady,

Yes, I've got TMS that likes to move round to different locations, some more persistent than others. Luckily the tailbone one that lasted approx 4 months and made sitting a real misery for me disappeared the same way it arrived (out of the blue). I hadn't fallen on it so my Dr blamed it on straining it by running on uneven sand a few days before the onset of pain (didn't really ever believe that). He also said I had a very long tailbone so just sitting on it puts pressure on it. That doesn't make sense as it hadn't suddenly grown longer or anything.

I sympathise with you. I remember asking the Dr if you could have the tailbone removed but of course he sensibly pointed out that it is full of nerves and that would cause lots of problems!

This was over 5 years ago before I discovered Sarno. Recently when my brother had a sore tailbone and got quite concerned about it (we're a family of worriers) I told him that it would probably resolve on its own and he hasn't mentioned it since so I assume it's better.

Anyway, apart from the odd ache from when sitting in a long movie I don't have a problem with it anymore. Now if all the other TMS spots would clear up that would be great.

Hope that helps.

Tunza

Thank you SO MUCH for all your advice and encouragement. It's so hard when there's this much pain to think it's caused from something other than a structural problem or a damage nerve, etc. etc. etc. I should be getting Dr. Sarno's book MindBody Prescription in the mail in the next day or two and I'm hoping it will help allay my fears and negative thoughts.

I am SO surprised that some of you have/had tailbone/rectal pain just like mine. I'm sorry that you're suffering but it is kind of a relief to know I'm not alone!

Hi Shady, I have the same problem as you. Along with having recurrent back problems for the last 10 yrs. I recently developed tennis elbow about 6 months ago and now 2 months ago tailbone pain! I just started reading the Dr.'s books on Saturday night. The very next day I got up and walked 18 holes of golf with my husband and no pian whatsoever in my back. The next day I saw my doc for the tailbone pain and had an x-ray which revealed nothing. and was told I had just inflamed it and I could have shots to numb the pain. I elected not to since I was having such a dramatic recovery on my back. Then I got to the parts in the book about tendonitis and tailbone pain and relized that these symptoms are all part of the TMS. It took the worry out of my mind. I too had read such distressing things about tailbone pain on other web sites. I have had such great success with only a few days of reading that I now am sure the tendonitis and tailbone pain will dissapear as well. Since I didn't do anything to cause the pain it only makes sense that there really is nothing seriously wrong. I have given up my back supports and elbow supports but I am still sitting on a "cushion" to relieve the pressure on the bone. It is still pretty sore to sit on. I guess I will have to give that up too in order to get better but haven't quite gotten up the courage to do so.

I hope you will let us know how you do and I will do the same.

Cheers,

Gaye

Shadytalks,
I have had the rectal spasms and they definitely can be TMS. Mine are for sure. I have had all sorts of TMS symptoms and for me this one was the worst- because it can't be ignored- you do have to go to the bathroom every day after all. After I first started doing the TMS work, all of my pain cleared up- these spasms included. However, I have found that whenever I stop 'doing the work' and go back to my old habbits of ignoring my emotions, symptoms start to crop up again. I have rectal spasms which have hit me hard again this week after being gone for six months (I was on the verge of allowing them to surgically cut my anal sphincter before I discovered Sarno).

I am starting a new job next week which I am very excited about but also very insecure and apprehensive about and I know without a doubt that is what is causing this flare up. I was also diagnosed with coccydinia and other pelvic floor dysfunctions. Hang in there- if you stick with the TMS work, this will go away. In the meantime- I take those Thermacare heat wraps (The ones for arms and shoulders I think) and stick them in my underwear. I wear them all day and night and it does help to break the spasm. But the permanent cure is psychological.

Shadytalks - welcome. Mindbody Prescription is very good and detailed, however, IMHO, I think it's best to read Healing Back Pain first. It's just easier to read and gives a quick understanding of TMS. After reading HBP then read MBP. I read HBP twice and then gave it to my wife and brother. I now read and reread MBP over and over since Memorial Day(almost immediate relief). 99% there after three years of misery. Good Luck and believe in it, it works.

Wow, thanks for the advice. I started MindBody prescription today so I can't exactly take your advice. So far, I find MBP amazing. I'll try to get HBP tomorrow. Thanks so much for your advice! I'm sure hopeful this is the solution to years and years of tandem ailments!
