Hi all, I have just read Dr. Sarno's "Healing Back-Pain" and am following same religiously. However, I have terrible severe pain down my left leg and while I try my best to ignore it and carry on being active, I find it impossable at times to stand straight or walk because the pain is crippling me. Can I take painkillers and still convince myself the pain is not from a physical source? Will taking the painkillers defeat the Dr. Sarno method? I have very strong will power but find the pain too much to be active without pain killers. Does anyone know what to do? Thanks in advance. |

Dr. Sarno will perscribe narcotic pain killers if the pain is severe. Suffering is not part of healing. As long as you accept that the pills are addressing the symptom only, and that there is no structural cause, it's fine. |

i just saw sarno last week. his belief is that pure painkillers are fine until one 'gets' the treatment. what he DOESNT want you to take is muscle relaxants, anti-inflamitories, neurontin (for nerve pain), etc. straight narcotics he is ok with. i am on painkillers myself as my pain is debilitating, but he has me stopping the neurontin. hope that helps |

Thanks Dave and Leegold,
Great, I will stay with the painkillers for the timebeing, I have no problem convincing myself that the painkillers are treating the symptons only and not the cause. Kind Regards, AnIrishGuy |
