Like here in the UK for example.

There is not the same pressure over here for doctors to make money for the practice. If they can find ways that cut the costs of treating patients it is in all their interests to do so....[M]aybe there could be a way of targeting the medical profession over here and in certain other European countries with good socialised medical systems - the Scandinavian countries for example.

Any research and findings would soon bounce bounce back to the US and might be taken seriously.

Anne,

It would be great if the TMS approach could take off in Europe and then spread to the Western Hemisphere. However, I'm not too optimistic about the UK. I know of one doctor with a Sarno-like approach there, and he's been denied NHS funding. He says he'll keep trying to get the NHS to change it's mind. For now, he has to charge his patients a fee, and make do with a lower salary than what we would have had by treating patients conventionally.

I don't know how the situation is in other European countries. Maybe someone else like Kajsa could help fill us in. Keep in mind, though, that the same conditioning that affects doctors, patients and insurance companies also affects many governments; we've all been conditioned to think in terms of physical treatments for physical pain.

P.S. In case someone's interested in the doctor I mentioned above, he is David Mickel MBChB MRCGP. He calls his approach "Reverse Therapy" and uses it to treat chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia.

Hi Jim,

Thamks for that information - typical NHS shortsightedness. They cut costs in areas where they definitely should not - in hospital cleaning for example - allowing the dreadful MRSA bug to get a hold in many hospitals, but something like this that could genuinely save money, long term, doesn't get a look in.

I've just looked for information about Dr Mickel and he lives and practises in Scotland, just forty miles from where I live. He also runs a clinic in Edinburgh, just one hundred miles from here. I am definitely going to buy his book and I'll find out if he is going to be speaking anywhere near here. I don't need treatment now - my TMS is well under control, but I would really like to meet him or hear him speak.

When I first found out about TMS I tried to find someone who who treated pain psychologically. I didn't just search for TMS doctors, I looked wider than that. Somehow I missed Dr Mickel - right on my own doorstep!

Thanks again

Anne

Anne,

You're welcome for the information! I'm glad you found it helpful.

I bought the electronic version of Dr. Mickel's book in January. While he has an intriguing approach, I was disappointed by the level of detail in the book. I get the feeling that the only way to really understand his treatment is to be a patient at one of his clinics, or to take his training to become a Reverse Therapy practitioner. By contrast, Dr. Sarno's books are supposed to contain all the information he presents in person.
