Interesting.

However, one should also keep in mind that those methods are outdated, and have been made illegal in many states.

When I was hospitalized for addiction in 1983,the patients bill of rights had NOT been passed yet in California, and many unethical inhuman treatments were still being employed...I saw the 5 point restraints displayed prominently to remind us to all keep cool.

I would venture to say that most anti-psych propaganda these days comes from Scientologists who have quite a few other odd ideas. For one,if you are not one of them you are either a 'wog' or an 'SP'(suppressive person),all non scientologists are 'criminals' and are 'fair game' for lying stealing and cheating.
I agree with them in that waaaaaay to many people are medicated improperly and there are many negligent doctors, but as in most things, one must be one's own advocate......don't rely on the 'system' to help you,and be alert.

Beware of scientologists....they masquerade behind many titles and other names of companies they own(the Cult Awareness Network comes to mind....a cult that owns it's own cultbusters...kinda' funny)

anyways...just a thought

I hate to be the devil's advocate, but it is my understanding that ECT has been a life saver for many folks with major depression and that the technology has been improved so that it is much safer than in the past.

Yeah, Scientology is the first thing I thought of when I saw this post. I read up on this last year. Hubbard wrote Dianetics in the 50's and used some of these horrible treatments as his basis for hating all psychology and psychiatry. But then he went on to "borrow" Freud's work on the unconscious and tried to take credit for what is clearly Frued's discovery. Dianetic therapy (the precurser to Scientology) is a crude form of psychotherapy where you go back on your "timeline" and reexperience your past in order to get rid of "engrams" that are stuck in the unconscious. When asked how this differs from hypnotherapy, Hubbard just said it's different without explanation. When the engrams (unconscious) are gone (placed in the conscious mind) you are then supposed to be "cleared" and healed from psychosomatic illnesses. Sound familiar? Unfortunately most people get worse from what they do to unsuspecting wogs.

Of course, he wanted to make more money so he made a religion out of it. As Baseball said, beware of scientologists, they can be very dangerous. Anyway, just thought I'd do some Scientology bashing.
