I've thought a lot about stress as it relates to my situation in particular, and to a certain extent TMS in general, although as to the last I'm very much a beginner and don't have lots to offer..

My main point of focus these days is my foot, as everything else that I'm assuming is TMS has improved a great deal.

But this foot thing is a real bear. One thing I've noticed with it, and actually most if not all of my TMS stuff, is that the pain diminishes when I try to relax the area in question. With my back this was really amazing to me. My back would start to go into spasm, and by TMS self-talk and just sort of letting go of all tension to the extent possible in that area, the spasm would just melt away, or partially melt away anyway.

So coming back to the foot. We've got the worst May weather in the history of the world going on here in MA and the wind was blowing so hard our lights went out. Immediately I fly into panic mode as we've had about 97 inches of rain in the last two days and without power the sump pump might just decide not to run , thereby filling the basement with many gallons of very unwelcome water..

So I'm flying around the house, bumping into walls, tripping over dogs, fumbling for flashlights, with visions of flooded cellars filling my head when suddenly the foot starts throbbing out of the blue...Not something it would normally do as I've not been able to exercise the last few days so it should be down to a dull roar..I thought for a second, realizing that the foot was obviously responding to my stress level...I took some deep breaths, thought TMS type thoughts, and just tried hard to let go of all tension in that area...Voila...much much better...

So...for what it's worth...I just thought I'd share that little experience...In my case anyway, it seems that stress is a major player in the stuff I'm learning to recognize as TMS

Good for you Art that you are putting it all together. I wish it were that easy for me. I do the self talk, etc and really do try to think appropriately about it but nothing helps. Glad to see it's working for you. Keep it up!

Thanks,Mary, but I don't want to give the impression I've got this TMS stuff solved in any way. Every day's a new day especially insofar as the foot's concerned. I still find myself thinking in temrs of "coincidence," and "alternate explanations." And the foot pain is not gone by any means. The fact that it's hung on so long makes me worry that it's not TMS at all.

Still, it's nice to win a few battles along the way. Hoping things improve from here...

This is off topic, but may I suggest a battery back-up pump for the sump. You can get them at Sears. I have had much more peace of mind during storms since I put one in my sump. Well, maybe it isn't so far off topic after all!

Thanks Fred...Great advice. It's the very next thing on the list. I was thinking in terms of a generator, but battery sounds cheaper maybe? Any idea as to cost?

Much appreciated
