I know "regular" tinnitus is a TMS equivalent, and I've had it for ages, along with other TMS symptoms that come and go. Lately, however, I've been taking care of my elderly mom during her brief hospitalization and now during her recovery. I am doing all I can for her, but am feeling the stress of being away from my own home. I am experiencing something more often that I only ever noticed rarely before: a "heatbeat" sound in my left ear at times. I guess it's called "pulsatile tinnitis"....My ears also feel full and stuffy lately. (Last year when I had to pretty much move in with Mom, I had a twitching finger thing going on, until I ignored it as a TMS/anxiety thing.) Thoughts? |

When my wife became paraplegic and I began taking care of her I got that heartbeat tinnitus. It was extremely loud and my head felt like it was going to explode. Only my youth saved me, my body was very strong.
You are tensed out. You need to start relaxation measures along with breathing techniques, and guided imagery. Don't let it get out of control. You need some added pleasure.

Sickagain,
If this is a new symptom, I would recommend following Dr. Sarno's advice and ruling out the physical first. If the physical is ruled out I like SteveO's advice. The other comment I have is that we are what we think. This is documented scientifically. Personally, much of my success at TMS has been how I say things and think about things. That said, have you ever thought of changing your userid to "ontheroadtowellness" instead of "sick again"?

I'd change my user ID on here once I can figure out if it's easy to do. Ha! Thanks, SteveO...I need to reread your book! The problem has eased since taking decongestant. And redirecting my attention. Will see how it goes...thanks! |

I had both regular & pulsatile tinnitus. I had extremely stressful family situations, and have been going to therapy for some time now. I finally had a major breakthrough in therapy, and found that the pulsatile tinnitus disappeared. I am still dealing with the regular tinnitus, and am hopeful that it too will go away at some point. I had MRI's and MRA's which ruled out the physical aspect. My therapist is not a Sarno-trained doctor, but we do discuss his theories and treatment. I do believe that his treatment works. I kept reading his book, and following through with therapy. I had the pulsatile tinnitus for almost one-year, and now it's gone. I never thought I would be one to give hope to another TMS sufferer, but here I am.
Keep on trying...follow-through with Sarno's book and maybe try a therapist to help you. Good luck! |

Go to www.tinnitus.org to find out about TRT approach. That along with Sarno cured me of 3 years of tinnitus (that began after attending a fireworks display). I already had a loss of hearing in the affected ear, but that did not really matter as I believe tinnitus is nearly always psychological/perceptual...The ear ringing comes back sometimes when I am under psychological stress - my brain's excuse is that I was exposed to loud sounds. It just takes a couple of days of disputing the structural explanation and sound conditioning (exposing yourself to constant sound - the louder the better - like white noise machines (including overnight), vent fans, radio, TV) - and the problem goes away. Note on the website that the feeling of stuffiness in the ear can be a psychosomatic component, but from my experience it can be some sort of congestion that can be cleared up with Afrin nose spray. |

Thanks for your replies and advice...it went away for awhile, but comes back when the stress levels get high...decongestants like Actifed seem to help. Tonight, it's been bugging me after a very high-anxiety day, so will see if a bit of Xanax helps it. Am too busy taking care of my elderly mom to go get it checked out by an ear-nose-throat specialist, plus they made my late father's ear problems worse when he went to a highly regarded otolaryngologist. Ugh! Now that same ear that sometimes gets the heartbeat sound is popping... Thanks for letting me rant. Hugs to all! |

Hi Sickagain,
Maybe the net-name "SICKAGAIN" may not be the best forum id to help you gain recovery. I've noticed when folks here change their forum moniker to something more positive they speed their TMS recovery--maybe something like "Wellagain" would be better. |

Can someone tell me *how* to change my username on here? It allows a change in password, but not username, as far as I can tell. By the way, it's two years later, and I still get that annoying sound in my ear. But I never really did much TMS- thinking psychologically with it. I'm still stuck on the possible physical reasons for it. I will try to do what has helped with my myriad weird TMS symptoms before...thanks! |
