"If you can lift it, it's not too heavy." I think Sarno said something to that effect in one of his books. I always try to remind myself of that...

But this week I have been experiencing low back pain. It came on a few hours after I was at the gym doing dead lifts. I have been doing deadlifts at around this heavy weight for a couple months. Now I'm doubting, thinking maybe I went too heavy, too quickly or had poor form.

It's scaring me because when I touch my back it feels like something is sticking out on the lower right of my back, like a muscle knot or something. So I immediately think "bulging disc," but what do I know.

When Sarno says we need to rule out "serious" problems, what does he mean? What are serious back problems? Are these only things like tumours? Are there serious injuries that can come from physical activity like weight lifting?

In The Divided Mind on page 281, Dr. James R. Rochelle writes "Even herniated discs seldom give rise to chronic pain syndromes because the swelling and inflammation from an acute herniation usually settles down within one to two weeks."

This makes me think that I may have truly injured myself and it will go away in a week -- so I should lay off weightlifting for a couple weeks. If this is a new episode of TMS I would be ignoring it and continue weightlifting.

Or does TMS not come into play until the problem is chronic? When is it too soon to say "It's TMS"?

Looking for some encouragement and guidance.

If you want to take a break from weight lifting while this issue resolves, but still work on your physical appearance during that time, I should mention that I have built myself up (as did my Dad) through the Charles Atlas program - which does not involve any weights or other apparatus - instead is a type of isometric program. It's available for free on the internet, if you know the correct link, or for $50 through the Charles Atlas web site...Call me an old fogey but this program can work, and quite well.

Do skype with SteveO, he's a lifter, a TMS expert author, and a TMS counselor. He can deal specifically with your concerns. Cecowe in a thread below is also a lifter and is here all the time with your same issues--maybe the two of you can do a skype conference call with SteveO and save some money. Here's a link to his web-site and how to get skype or phone consutls :

BB65 did an excellent job of answering your concerns. This is the TMS Forum, so EMOTIONS ARE THE MAIN CAUSE! According to the TMS literature your odds are 80% it's TMS. There are some "real" back injuries usually to trauma--like falling off a roof. It happened to my carpenter once, he got helicoptered out--he's good as new now. If no one dropped a weight on you from ten feet up, you probably didn't do anything to your spine. No one can dx if there's any of those other things that are real, if you're worried about them see a doctor and have him check you for those to eliminate the "seriouses".Keep reading the books until you believe them. Losing your job and a rent increase are two good emotional stressors from the Rahe-Holmes list that can cause TMS.

The timing of my low back pain is so classic TMS it seems. I just lost a job and my rent is going up. Yet I'm still stuck on whether this pain is something else. Is the "something else" only infection, cancer or fractures?

I read in The Divided Mind (page 269) that "There are many things that can cause back pain. Some examples include infection, cancer, and a fracture from thinning bone. Emotions are another cause."

Is there not any other legitimate back pain?

You couldn't feel a bulging disc if you wanted to.. we're talking millimeters. I lift weights, do pushups and crawl around under and over stuff all day long and I am 52... I often try to carry stuff I can't ...300 pound oak doors, huge pieces of lead in demolition. When I can't I drop it and get help, but my ego is still such that I TRY to show off to the youngsters.

Take a look at the usual and don't forget the sneaky 'fear of hurting yourself', or physicophobia as sarno puts it. I haven't read TDM in a minute, but I have never heard anything about swelling causing pain. I had a nice summer TMS attack one year (while I was going through a divorce) and my knee 'swelled'... The pain went away as soon as I treated it as TMS... the 'swelling' was??? Maybe I have ugly swollen knees. I don't look at them that often

"when is it too soon"... the older I get, the answer is immediately. Your intuition becomes your guide
