Posted - 09/09/2011 : 12:03:06 Sorry for bad english (I am a swede): I have been pain free for half a year now, before that I had various symptoms like sciatica, throat pain, heart symptoms etc for about 5 years. I have been to psychodynamic therapy for 3 years and maybe that has helped me gradually, still I had more problems with anxiety and depression when the pain decreased.
I had a real backdraw in mars when my job was challenging and my anxiety went high. Then I got a tip from the doctor about ACT - acceptance and commitment therapy. I have read the book "Get out of your mind and in to your life" by Steven Hayes, founder of the therapy method. This resonates SO good with me and with TMS theory as well. For me it opens up a new understanding of "let go" ie acceptance. I remember signature "la kevin" in this forum talked so much about "letting go" and control.
The unwillingness to accept the pain (emotional/physical) feeds the suffering according to ACT. I think it is so very hard to understand acceptance in its true meaning but it is worth every effort to practice this because in the end it is so powerful and you can be able to let go, open up, and get out there and live, NOT CONTROL.
As described in the end of the book: You have two choices: 1. The safe comfortable road that means you continue to control and avoid your difficult feelings. Or 2. If you are so deadly tired of this: accept, let go and start acting towards a life according to your values in life. Both choices is challenging and will contain pain but the latter will also contain hope and personal development while the first only makes you smaller and less free.
I recommend the book, especially the chapters where acceptance is described and the exercises there. Some chapters are too technical.
I feel so much for all you people with psychosomatic symptoms. It is so challenging to cope with this. For me it dissappeared gradually in a couple of month.
I dont want you to "jump" into this theory as a silver bullit, that would be a classical TMS trap. Just read it, it is a complement maybe to Sarno and TMS theory.
Finally I just want to say: Stop resisting, stop being a victim, start to allow you feelings, start being the source that take responsibility for the rest of your life.
I wish you all the best

Posted - 12/19/2012 : 06:20:11 jonnieboy your story is so inspireing-im glad you found a way out of the physical pain and can now accept the mental strain or mental pain and transfer it over into something you can look at in a better light. i have had the ACT book by hayes that your talking about ,i too find that when we learn to think about the psycolgical instead of the physical if were not prepared with a true knowledge of acceptance ,then we can hurt in a whole new way from the mind. im all about learning the whole knowledge therapy .i plan to study hayes book after im done with weekes.i have to admit after i looked at all the technical excerpts i was a bit slow on getting around to reading it but your out take on the whole of the knowledge in truth has sparked my intrest-im glad you see things in a better light now . god bless you

Posted - 12/18/2012 : 14:14:14 Hi again I wanted to post again to tell you that I am still free from symptoms. The last year have been really challenging when it comes to both job and private life BUT I have not been in any pain physically, I have NO worries about my health and I promise I had severe health anxiety for many years, every 10th second I thought about cancer and so on. I had panic attacks occasionally, I had SEVERE pain in neck, leg etc many strange sensations for many many years. For some reason, the body is not where my problems go any longer.
I have been to therapy for 4 years (psychodynamic) and ended this summer. I also have been training a lot (running) the last two years. Really good for my feeling that I am strong and have no serious illness, the pain in my leg disappeared gradually... I can not say WHEN the pain and the obsession of pain and health disappered, it happened during a period of time where my focus more and more was directed to my real problems at work, at home etc.
The last year I have kept reminding myself of some life wisdom words that I have kept on a note in my wallet, maybe this daily reminders have helped me. I have also read a lot in the ACT book by Steven Hayes that I mentioned in my success story. I think that book was the one the made me think very realistic about myself and my life.
Still, I am not happier now than when I had my pains BUT the difference is that I now experience life and all psychological pains that comes with it and accept that me and all other human beings have to cope with similar pains, but what is important is to avoid the suffering part and with that I mean the secondary feelings about the psycho pains, when you start wondering why you feel like you feel etc...It is all in the ACT book actually.
Just wanted to share, I visit this forum maybe once a month because TMS is still a very important experience for me and I really feel for all people suffering with pain. |
