Posted - 12/16/2015 : 12:54:24 I'm a poster from way back but I haven't visited the forum for quite a while because my sciatica has been MUCH improved and I attribute that to Sarno. I had 3 laminectomies and one spinal fusion many years ago with no improvement in the original problem - sciatica of the left butt and leg/foot. Also, I had every other possible procedure and therapy before I really turned my attention to Sarno...One question for the readers - because I am starting to drift into the oppressive morass of structural/physical explanation...I was in karate for 10 years. I never returned after the sciatica hit (over 30 years ago) but I still love to spar around gently with my college age son (I do leave out the kicks nowadays). However, I can't seem to punch using the rear hand without turning on the sciatica for hours or days. That's whether I am in an orthodox or southpaw stance. I am fine throwing lead punches - you know - jabs, hooks, or back-fists. I realize throwing a "right cross" puts a lot of twist and torque on your spine as you are "closing the door" with your hips. The ridiculous thing is - I can feel the pain (although it is mild pain) in my leg BEFORE I throw the "forbidden" punch - when I am just thinking about throwing it. However, if I do throw the punch I usually get intense pain (the same pain I feel just thinking about throwing the punch but much amplified and more spread out - like now involving the butt and not just the leg and more pronounced in the ankle and foot)...Now, it seems like the explanation must be TMS conditioning in both instances, but my son threw me a curve ball. My son said, yes, the pain that occurs upon thinking of throwing the punch is obviously TMS conditioning. He then added that the more intense pain after actually throwing the punch could be structural - with a TMS overlay - since I had all that back surgery. Like all good TMSers, I am just a bit OCD, so now I can't get his explanation out of my head. Could it be right? Should I continue throwing the "banned" punches via Fred Amir challenge mode or just accept that this is one small area in my life that I need to avoid and count my blessings. |

Posted - 12/19/2015 : 13:36:44 Thanks, Tennis Tom, it's good to read your posts again. I hope you are still participating in your favorite sport...What I really was asking about was the second instance - when I actually throw the rear hand - and I get worse pain. (I realize the first instance - mild pain generated by anticipation of specific feared activity - must be completely TMS conditioning.) In regard to throwing the rear hand, can it be that I actually have a structural defect in the lower back per the surgeries and this is the cause of the pain, physical in nature, perhaps exaggerated by TMS conditioning fears (that's what I meant by overlay), rather than this worse pain being brain-generated/TMS (autonomic nervous system pinching off blood flow to disc area). |

Posted - 12/16/2015 : 13:38:36 More detail/overthinking? - If I choose to not throw the rear hand but still light spar with my son, I can still use the rear hand effectively for defense - just not offense - but then I am not giving my son the "full experience" of sparring/providing effective defense and I feel uncomfortable showing him my "weakness". (He puts no real pressure on me to throw the rear hand.) |
