One year ago, my mom had a serious case of shingles (in and above right eye, spreading onto forehead). She still experiences intermittent shooting pain, discomfort and sensitivity on that side of her forehead. I read a previous thread on this site that said shingles cannot be considered tms, but that the longer period of discomfort can be. My mom is very familiar with Dr. Sarno's work and has had (and self healed) tms in the past, related to other health challenges. Can anyone speak to the shingles issue or share their experience? Thank you very much.

I'm gonna tell you what happenned with me 5 years ago. I did a MRI exam because of my chronic pain. After the MRI, everything was ok. I went to bed 1,5 hour after the exam. And wake up in the midle of the night with my back full with wrinkles, red mark and a buning pain. It took me 2 years to get better from the MRI exam. I felt burning pain all over my body (I later found out this is called neuropathic pain). No Dr showd interest on my case. They told me that MRI is inocuous, despite many people complaint about its side effects.
I read several studies and in one of them I discovered that ELectromagnetic Radiation/Radiofrequecy/ WI-FIs, Cell Phone Towers, cell phones, and so on, causes damage to the skyn nerves. It is called Electromagnetic Radiation. THIS IS REAL, not TMS, unfortunately. Radiation damage your body. Even low non-ionizing radiation, like EMFs.
Now you ask? How did this realated to Shingles. Well, After the MRI I went to some Drs, as I told you, and they all did find that my skyn nerves were damage, and that my skyn was Redish, but they said the cause was Shingles. They all refused to attribut my problem to the MRI. Why? Because its FDA approved, and each MRI costs 400€ to 1000€.

PS: Despite all this I'm a firmly believer in TMS, and Dr Sarno's theories. That is how I final cured my chronic pain, in the first place the one that lead me to do the MRI. I think that most diseases, even auto-imune ones, are TMS, however, our bodys are still subject to the nasty effects of neurotoxyns, chemical products and radiation. Envoirmental diseases do exist... and as we aged it is more difficult to cope with them...

**Sure I can lay down on a bed of nails and not have pain but why am I having back pain when laying down on a soft mattress?

Stress CAN exacerbate any herpes type of pain, so that's the connection. I get outbreaks the very next day when I am severely stressed.

One of my coworkers had herpes above his eye lid. He had pain for awhile everytime he blinked or even when he would lay down on his pillow.
He went to a herpes specialist who said it sounded like post herp pain but that its variable from person to person. The doctor prescribed lyrica but also said that the times my friend got pain and the things that exacerbate it didnt make sense.

I haven't had shingles but have had herpes on the roof of my mouth for many years. Like any herpes or shingles, the nerve is activated and hurts. What your mother has is post-herpetic neuralgia. I would not equate it with TMS. It just happens, particularly if the person does not get a shot of acyclovir within the first 48 hours when symptoms appear.
