Posted - 01/05/2014 : 06:00:19 Hi fellow TMS colleagues.. I am new to the forum and this is my first post. I am so pleased to find a group of people that connect with Dr. Sarno's work as I am.
I could use some help. Has anyone had success dealing with allergic reactions as TMS?
I have been cycling through three seemingly allergic reactions for the past two months: swelling of lips, eyes and occasionally throat, sharp pain that radiates up through chest and back, deep hives over much of my body. The symptoms rotate and are usually one at a time. They are all quite dramatic.
I have been to doctors and had blood work-ups but there has been no explanation. I am not on medications except thyroid supplements for Hashimotos. I have been to an endocronolgist but she had no explanation for my symptoms. I switched from generic Synthroid to non generic and got better a few days later so I was convinced this was the issue. Now a week later the symptoms are back in full force. This leads me to believe the change of the Synthroid acted as a temporary placebo.
I started an elimination diet and it has made no difference so I do not think this is a food allergy. There also seems to be no connection to anything I eat.
I have never suffered winter allergies before.
I experienced these same symptoms briefly years ago. At that time I went down a long road with an allergist with no benefit. I am hesitant to do so again.
Might this be TMS? I have found a few references to TMS and allergies in The Divided Mind. The symptoms are quite dramatic so it seems hard to believe this is all TMS. Yet the lack of any cause or consistency or medical explanation feels oh so familiar to other issues I have had that were helped by Sarno's books: Severe neck and shoulder pain. Significant GI issues. For these problems over the ears I went down the usual route. Doctors, medicines, tests, Accupuncturists, Chinese herbalists, lots of time and expense, no help at all etc. We have all heard the stories. In each case some work with Sarno cured the symptoms quickly and got me off all medicines and back to my life. So I am clearly someone who has TMS.
I am also less worried about money for the first time in a while. I am tempted to think this is a symptom replacement. I am aware of concern I hold over moving my mother to a nursing home right now.
Hm, even as I write all this I am becoming more convinced these dramatic allergic reactions are TMS.
I'd appreciate hearing from other people who may have had similar symptoms.
Thank you Harry |

Posted - 02/01/2014 : 15:47:06 Just want to say that I'm feeling much better. Went on a 21 day cleanse. 'Clean' by Dr.junger. And went on some meds with allergist. I've been weening myself off the meds and feel mostly back to normal. Eating well gave me a sense of empowerment. Calming down has helped. Harry |

Posted - 01/08/2014 : 05:07:20 Thank you Ace. Ended up in emergency room last night with throat swelling. Im finenow. It's been scary. I am convinced the 'diagnosis' is angeodema and the 'cause' is auto immune related. Like my Hashimotos thyroiditis. Bit these 'diagnosis' seem so consistent with my past string of problems. All f which I finally resolved on my own with the work of Dr. Sarno.
So, I will continue to deal with the symptoms but I seek to make my base TMS. It feels connected based on my past dealing with TMS related issues.
I appreciate your getting back to me. I think I'll do another post on TMS and auto immune diseases.
Best, Harry |

Posted - 01/07/2014 : 11:07:14 Yes Harry, it sounds like TMS to me. I have come to realize that to overcome symptoms you have to decondition yourself from repeatedly get your nerves strained/hyped up to your daily life and also not letting the symptoms sensitize your nerves even more. This is easier said than done, but I refer you back to my list on how to accomplish this. One thing I do not understand is why some can decondition themself faster than others. I wonder if it has to do with how strong the generational influence is in the individual that takes the longer time. |

Posted - 01/05/2014 : 17:39:06 Hi, Harry Segal, and welcome to the forum. Speaking from my own experience, I would venture to say "yes, this is TMS".
My brother has suffered from allergies all his life (since 3 months of age) and I decided early on nor to have them. Of course, sometimes a symptom pops up but I've always been able to tell it to get lost and it does! Some part of me just flatly refuses to be allergic to stuff. Not interested. There are so many ways to have TMS so why bother?
You might ask how a kid of 3 months could chose to have allergies (in his case, severe eczema that kept him tied down to a hospital bed for almost a year) and I can't answer you that except that I've heard there may be a connection between eczema and being separated from mother. Our mother wasn't exactly the warm and cozy type and maybe he couldn't adapt to the way things were in our home.
Later on, he switched to severe asthma and probably got taken by ambulance to the hospital 5 or 6 times a year, on average. The rest of the time, he was just sick. As he grew older, he learned to take care of himself both physically and emotionally. The better he got at that, the better his allergies. Now he has no big problem with them but it's been an expensive battle both in terms of time and money. It still takes up just about all his available energy which, to tell you the truth, I suspect is the point of them.
Sounds to me like you have probably nailed the underlying causes of your current symptoms. What I would do is call a meeting of my parts who have something to say about moving mom to a nursing home. You will learn a lot.
Hope you stick around, Harry.
