Posted - 12/19/2013 : 13:43:10 Dear friends, I am almost in tears right now from my two front teeth hurting. Anyone who read my last post (which I deleted because no one responded) what happened was I went to the dentist for a cracked back molar. When the hygenist was suctioning saliva from my mouth, the plastic tube hit pretty hard into my 2 front teeth and it started the same pain I had years ago after a bad car accident. (wherein my teeth hit the steering wheel)..They were also injured by a friends head when we were dancing once after that and by my dog once. It's been two weeks and after acupuncture and advil they started feeling better until i drank some soup which was hot. I am assuming that either they got inflamed again from the heat of the soup..or..it is TMS!!!!!!!!!! Because I anticipated that the soup might not be a good idea?? They were already X rayed..No abcess or infection of any kind. They are bruised. I am getting myself terrified I am going to end up losing my two front teeth!
This time of year is extra hard on me due to all the deaths of family members and other family/financial, etc. issues. so there is plenty on my plate to spur on TMS..I don't recall if any of Sarno's books ever touched on pain in the teeth except related to TMJ (which I have had as well..but that is usually associated w/ back teeth.) I really need some support right now..feel like i am going out of my mind. Thanks for reading. |

Posted - 12/20/2013 : 08:26:34 Njoy, WOW that is quite a story..OMG you must have been terrified! I am glad u are feeling better and happy I made you laugh..:) They say laughter is the best medicine..I'm sneaking and writing from work so sorry if I am brief. Last night the front teeth hurt so bad I had to take a strong pain killer,,and I hate taking meds! Today, so far, things are calmer in there but there is extra saliva being produced in my mouth right now..(What the heck is that)..I dare not check on the internet and drive myself nuts! I have to sing tonight and smile, etc. etc. Wont be drinking my soothing hot tea though..just in case..This TMS thing is maddening..but u are right..We are here to learn, no doubt about that.. Hugs to all |

Thank you for that! It really made me laugh and not because I don't feel your pain (my head and front teeth promptly started to hurt, in sympathy) but because what you said is SO true.
Last week I was basically useless for about 5 days because, get this, one of my "girls" turned bright red and swelled up to twice it's size. Of course, I tore off to the doctor who put me on a wicked strong antibiotic (I HATE antibiotics and just about everything else created by pharmaceutical companies) and told me "There are really only two possibilities. One is an infection and the other is inflammatory breast cancer". Now doesn't that have a pleasant ring to it? It does NOT.
So I'm sick as a pup, all swollen up, taking this antibiotic that is known for horrifying side effects and, yay! I'm getting better!! Wow, lovely, great. Then, on the 3rd day, I had leg cramps. Okay, not to bad. Even posted about that on this forum.
Well, that night I woke up with the WORST cramps of my entire life. Both feet. Right leg, as well. I was just screaming and flipping around the room, trying to make it into the living room where I might be able to walk around and have some hope of alleviating the cramp. Meanwhile, my friend (I was dog sitting for her at the time; scared the daylights out of the dogs) had a new Chinese student who had just moved into her basement suite and I'm screaming bloody murder and uttering the most appalling and rude swear words I know and a few I made up on the spot. Next day the Chinese kid swore he didn't hear me but if he was just being polite he certainly learned some colorful English!
Finally, this cramp subsided and eventually I tried to go back to bed. No way. Within a few minutes I was wide awake with the same cramps in full swing.
This went on all night until about 7 a.m. when I finally passed out in my chair and caught a few hours sleep. I woke up with with my jaw clenched and my head in a vice. Well, that's how it felt. For a while it radiated down my right arm and into my chest and I could barely breathe.
A friend came over, my husband drove into town, and they both insisted I go to the ER where the doc told me to stop the antibiotic (like I hadn't already done that!). Gradually, over the next day or two, the vice around my head came and went but gradually got better. Even the "girl" in question improved. Except for being totally soured on life (what IS THIS!!?!) I started to feel pretty good.
I don't know about you but I believe there is meaning to existence. We are here to learn something and it leads somewhere. WTF we are learning I don't always know but have accepted that we are not in possession of all the facts and will just have to wait and see.
I have had TMS (and other "real" stuff, maybe) all my life. Without it, would I be paying any attention to the meaning and big questions of life? Probably not, knowing me. I would be so busy doing that there would be no time for being.
No idea if this is the slightest help to you but I want you to know that I am so sympathetic. The only advice I have is this: Fear is our enemy and, paradoxically, our friend. Fear is the human condition. Fear leads us back to ourselves when we are so far out of it that all signposts have been lost.
Face the fear. Engage it. Ask what it is trying to tell you. It might not answer immediately but asking starts a dialogue with a part of you that has something to say.
At least that's what works for me when nothing else does.

Posted - 12/19/2013 : 20:19:18 PS:: This is truly maddening...Tooth nerve pain is no joke. I have to get to sleep because i have to work all day tomorrow at my 'normal' job..then sing in the evening..I just got a sharp pain in a different section of my mouth that isn't even related to what happened to the two front teeth or the cracked molar on the bottom! My jaw feels fine so i don't think it is TMS/TMJ...this is a nightmare..I just want to be unconscious. I am going to re read your responses for comfort. I have to get through this..and I will not even entertain the thought of a root canal. |

Posted - 12/19/2013 : 20:06:14 Thanks so much Dave, gigalos and Andy! I really appreciate your responses and they are helpful. :) The original injury was real..the accident that happened in Vegas 10 or so years ago. My 2 front teeth hit against the steering wheel in a collision. I was lucky to not lose them at the time. The feeling like they were re-injured those times like Dave pointed out could indeed be TMS. Here is the only thing really worrying me..the dentist said that based on the X ray, I was born w/ a small root to tooth ratio and the slightest hit would make them hurt..especially because they were injured years ago. I like to be reminded that the body does heal COMPLETELY from old injuries..I have to think of that over and over to fight my brains tendency to create TMS..It was good the X ray showed no infection, but i wish he never told me about the anatomy issue because it might be why my brain is running w/ fear..
Andy I so relate to how fearful you were and how it nearly ruined so much that was important to you. I just came back from rehearsal for a gig i have tomorrow night and it was very distracting singing w/ these teeth acting up and the subsequent headache. (i am not prone to headaches). I usually drink hot water and lemon for my voice and now i am afraid of drinking anything hot..GEEEEEZZZZZ this TMS is SUCH a pain in the EVERYTHING it seems! There seems to not be a spot on my whole body that hasn't been attacked at one point or another.
Emotionally the biggest issues for me have to do w/ feeling like the black sheep of the family and also being estranged from certain family members..(long, boring story)..Also financial stress and realizing i might have to move AGAIN is adding to things. It truly has been a very tough year..(and not because of TMS symptoms...but they sure don't help!)
Gigalos..you are so right..Focusing on them does make them worse..i noticed that, for sure..A doctor friend of mine reminded me that if they healed b4, chances are they will heal again..I never thought my brain would use this as an excuse to create TMS in my teeth..that is probably the weirdest manifestation I have had yet. |

Posted - 12/19/2013 : 16:32:30 It seems this tooth pain is a convincing distraction. Without hesitation you believe they were "injured" by a friend's head, your dog, a plastic tube, and hot soup. You chose a physical treatment (acupuncture) and are obsessing about this pain.
Assuming your doctor ruled out serious injury or illness, it is possible that this is a manifestation of TMS. Remember, our bodies heal completely from old injuries. You seem to have some nerve sensitivity, and while this could cause temporary pain from the minor traumas you describe, TMS could seize the opportunity to perpetuate the pain.
It is good that you are touching on the potential emotional triggers. Continue to do that when you are aware of the pain. Try to accept that there is nothing seriously wrong and the pain will fade soon. |

Posted - 12/19/2013 : 15:23:23 Hi Karen, Sorry to hear of your troubles, I felt guilty not responding last week as I had a similar experience this summer with one of my crowns. Here is what I said in my post:
This summer I was on my main windsurfing trip for the year on the Sacramento Delta. After many days of planning and preparation I was to meet friends to windsurf in some of the best winds in California. I was excited, elated and very happy. The day before my friends were to arrive I developed a tooth ache, in fact it was a root canal with pain peaking every hour or so with the pain increasing and getting my full attention. I am an expert at root canals having nurtured one for four months while waiting for dental insurance to kick in. So I knew with FEAR that this was a real root canal! Psychologically I was a basket case. My trip was going to be ruined and in a panic I called my wife Sheila to discuss coming home 300 miles to see our Dentist. This meant cancelling my windsurfing and missing the best winds of the year. I could imagine the procedure taking place with considerable accuracy, the shots the drilling and the long session with those little files. I also knew this meant drilling through an existing crown, as I have said I am an expert! I tried to fathom out which tooth hurt. Strangely I could not decide which tooth was bothering me, was it a top or bottom tooth? I prodded and poked my mouth and with surprise found out it was opposite to where I thought it was. My train of thought then turned to thinking it might be TMS. Wow - some TMS pros might say: “What took you so long”. I took a Tylenol PM and the pain disappeared by the following morning and never came back. It was not a root canal but merely a tooth made sore by crunching the grain of whole wheat bread. I had indeed bothered the nerve. I wish the discovery had been the two seconds that Dave spoke of, but it wasn’t. This TMS pain had crept up over a week so that I would not notice. The TMS gremlin knew this windsurfing trip was important to me and how fearful I was to miss it. This was a new area of pain for me, I was caught unawares and TMS also knew this. The TMS gremlin also knew of my emphatic view point on root canals and how stubborn I was with these ideas. Looking back I am grateful this happened, it was a great opportunity to review a pain, as events like this one in new areas very rare. This one gave me the opportunity to review TMS. It gave me the chance to confirm and reflect my belief in TMS. The pain was definitely physical, Dr. Sarno would say “intimidating”. It was my psychological and catastrophising fear that kept it in my thinking brain. Thinking psychologically did the trick to dispel it. In my opinion, any pain even a minor paper cut, has the potential to attract TMS worry. Therefore it’s always 100% TMS until proved otherwise with substantial evidence.
Karen, I still have slight pains as of today occasionally, but I do think that since you knocked your two teeth and you have good Xray results it is not a manifestation of TMS, but you are allowing it to bother you as if it were. I did the same. I have noticed it sometimes takes weeks or months for teeth nerves to settle down, just when you think you are better you eat ice cream or hot coffee and the pain comes soaring back.
Either way whether it’s TMS or not the only way is to accept it for what it is, take pain killers and believe that your teeth are fine. Once I stopped worrying the pain dispelled, by my worrying I made the pain worse.

Posted - 12/19/2013 : 15:04:35 hi sa,
sorry to hear you are having problems.
I don't think the teeth can get inflamed from heat or a little hit from the tube. There is a pretty big chance it is TMS. One dead giveaway, although it is not said that you don't have TMS when absent, is painful spots (trigger points) in the temporalis muscle, especially right behind your eyes. Search google for more details (trigger points temporalis).
I had very sensitive upper front teeth, which is weird because one of them had a root canal 20 years ago :), and that is all gone.. In my case it definitely was TMS.
If you want to be sure it is nothing serious, visit your dentist!
Warning, if you find trigger points, don't focus on getting rid of them. Only use them as an indication of TMS. Focussing will probably only make things worse. |
