During the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, many of the kings and queens of England and France were believed to be able to cure scrofula, aka the king’s evil, simply by touch. During the middle 16 hundreds, a man named Valentine Greatrakes was able to outdo the sovereigns in this regard. His abilities were taken seriously by the great scientist Robert Boyle and other members of the Royal Society. In fact Mr. Greatrakes is credited with performing the first “Protestant miracles” (he belonged to the church of England). Even today, one can find scientific papers speculating about what was behind Valentine’s “miraculous” healings.
What is interesting about all this is that scrofula is a real disease. It’s immediate cause is an infection of the lymph nodes by certain types of mycobacterium. One such type also causes TB. Scrofula is usually successfully treated with antibiotics and so I doubt Sarno would consider it to be a form of TMS. This raises the question of whether people suffering from such non-TMS diseases can benefit from Sarno’s methods?
