"Lower backs seem to be the theme of the day", according to the Tennis Channel commentator. Andy Murray just had back surgery after having the weight of the United Kingdom hanging off his kilts, finally winning Wimbledon, the first Limey to do so (sort of, he's a Scot) since Fred Perry did it way back in 1936. Tommy Haas dropped out of the Shanghai ATP Tournament with a back and Kei Nishikori was getting a court-side massage before "struggling" and losing to Tsongas.

Commentator said to make sure you turn the air conditioners off when you go to sleep at night, it will cause a stiff neck in the morning (couldn't have anything to do with facing Nadal on center court). One thing the commentator said that was right was "...the more you try to massage and manipulate it, the worse it gets."--very TMS'y advice.

Katie, you are quite a knowledgeble tennis/TMS fan, I agree with you on your takes, lots of pressures. If you're interested there's a big ATP men's ProTour tennis tournament going on just down the road at Tiburon Peninsula Club all week and this weekend. Check it out, world class athletes, most have been on TV or soon will be. The winner last year, Jack Sock made it to Wimby this year and an Aussie, Sam Groth, with the WORLD'S FASTEST SERVE, 162MPH, in tennis history, has been there this week. He's a hoot to watch, a huge ex-rugby player with a bunch of tattoos--check it out.

Cheers,
tt

I get TMS just from WATCHING tennis!

It's so easy to see other people's TMS issues, isn't it? Watching tennis is especially interesting because it's a solo sport, and the person's emotional state is everything.

I really can't imagine the level of stress that these tennis players are under. Another similar phenomenon is the fact that pretty much ALL the young women players on the pro tour have big bellies or "muffin top." Hardly a great advertisement for the idea that exercise helps you control your weight (remember these are young women in their 20s and they work out for hours a day). Of course, they are under their own particular stress, and often seem to carry the emotional stress of crazy ambitious parents.

Then there's Venus who has had "Sjogren's Syndrome." Similar to or another name for Fibromyalgia, which is what I used to think I had. Can't even imagine the stress of the Williams sisters' life, with their sister being murdered, being the first really big black tennis stars, competing against each other while really loving each other. Such inner conflict!

Mind you, it's not just the girls and their parents - look at Murray's mum, and then look at his girlfriend. Same intense, angry expression. Ditto with Federer's wife and mother, who both look equally disapproving. Can he ever be good enough?

Meanwhile, my mother just died, and in the last 2 weeks I traveled to England and back (from California), dealt with her all the bureaucratic stuff around her death, put on a funeral, cleared her house, returned with jet lag and continued work, and now I'm hurting so much I was actually googling symptoms until I remembered what is really going on.

My own personal pro tour.
