Hey All,

A friend of mine has knee arthritis from an ACL reconstruction twelve years ago. It hurts him in the posterior knee component to straighten his leg, particularly after heavy exercise, hence his suspicion of the cyst. There's so much out there that's conflicting about these things, and I don't want to lead him in the direction of TMS without someone else chiming in, given his aversion to doctors. They will likely offer to drain or remove the cyst if found, even though it's not really a cyst, but a synovial fluid drainage duct. He's thinking TMS because it was not precipitated by any strenuous activity this time, yet the symptom is constantly with him.

Thanks so much.

Thanks everybody. Turns out he just has a tight popliteus muscle, which sounds like TMS, yet also sounds like something he should treat physically (since he can't straighten the leg).

Any thoughts? No swelling, etc.

I had a dr. tell me recently (and randomly because my knee wasn't bothering me) that I had a baker's cyst. She said 1 in 3 people have it and don't know it. She found it accidentally. So if it's there it's there. I mean, not every body kink is TMS! I will say though that after finding out i had a baker's cyst I had pain in my knee for 2 weeks. That IS TMS!!! LOL!!

Get it imaged, I'm no radiologist but I'd think cysts would show up on MRI's. Rule #1 of TMS is to eliminate real structural conditions.

I've had some experience with this. I tried to ignore it and ran with it a few times, but my knee got so painful and swollen I had to quit. It's resolved now thankfully. There are some on this forum who insist swelling and inflammation can be TMS, and maybe it can. But with swelling we're talking about real, structural changes so not sure how it can be regarded in the same way as say, back pain.

If it were me, I'd get it drained. Also your friend has had extensive surgery. I'm skeptical it would be psychosomatic. (for what that's worth, which likely isn't much)
