Hi All,

It has been a few days, but wanted to give an update. I had a L5 S1 discectomy on Wednesday. My pain disappeared with the steroid injection, however the numbness and weakness in my leg continued to get worse. I was so scared that I might loss my bowels or develop drop foot. I have to say, I am very happy I had the surgery. My doctor said that my herniation was very small, but there was a hard piece that broke off and was compressing my spinal nerve, which he removed. I woke up with no pain, my Achilles is starting to rebound and my calf is as well. The numbness remains, but nerves take time to heal. My recovery may take a while, but I feel like I am headed in a positive direction. Estimated time to be back on tennis court: 3 months!!!

I really appreciate all of your input and encouragement through my pain. I believe in Sarno and his ideas, but this time, it was physical. From this point forward I will look at things going on in my body in a new light. I will also share, that just reading the books, this forum and talking to one of you, I have realized that I am too hard on myself, very sad and anger about my mom's death 5 years ago and anxious. Those are things I will continue to work on. I strongly believe things happen for a reason and while I did not want my back to get to this point, it did. I am just happy I learned a whole lot about myself along the way.

Cheers,
Jen

So I spoke to the nurse today and asked EXACTLY what the doctor wrote about my surgery. You see I was not completely satisfied with the water down version my husband gave me...sometimes women are more detailed in explanations:). The doctor removed several small hard fragments from my nerve root, a very large, hard fragment from the spinal nerve and a small herniation. I am guessing the herniation had nothing to do with pain and/or numbness, but the large, hard fragment was the culprit. I am feeling physically better, with the exception that my calf that is atrophied becomes swollen after standing or walking on it for a long period of time. I have a call into the doctor about this..we'll see what he says. Hopefully it is just from doing too much and not resting enough. I have a hard time laying around. The journey to recovery continues...Thought for today: Stay POSITIVE!!!

good for you. Wishing you a full and complete recovery.

Just remember: a healthy mind made the body healthy.
