I was just reading on Dr. Schubiner’s forum that guilt is major factor in TMS. I find this interesting as I have a colleague that is riddled with pain and also has behaviors he has to suppress guilt – while he is not having an affair he is messing around with women.

Please correct me if I am wrong but as I understand it when he has a guilty feeling (he must) he either has to honor it and stop the behavior or bury it so he can continue the behavior?

I also see this in friends with addictions, they know smoking or excessive shopping is bad but they have to suppress some awareness that it is not right and I would guess this would also be guilt.

Anyone else have any experience with this...thoughts ?

Hi RikR,

After 36 years of not smoking, I can look back and say there is nothing like the next puff to appease the guilt and make you feel better! The guilty feeling is suppressed with the thought: “Oh well, it’s too late now, I’ll give it up tomorrow.”

With all the publicity and down side to smoking, I would imagine most smokers suppress the facts either consciously or sub-consciously, some with guilt, some not.

Tennis

What I know about are the lusty looks and the lunch dates. He swears there is no sex but he is clearly emotionally cheating on his wife

I love my wife so much no other woman could compel me to do this and if it were done to me I would be crushed....so I know there are emotional consequences.

there are also the kind of people that do the wrong thing but don't think what they do is wrong, or they think they are above the law (bill clinton), or they think they deserve it (insurance fraud), or that's is just the way they were raise, their parents did it so they think it is ok to do (drug use, womenizer..)

And then there are who know what they did is wrong but they just say so what. I don't care. And they really don't feel any guilt about it.

But I think guilt is a strong negative emotion, sooner or later the one who committed the guilty act will pay dearly for it. So either stop and "rehab" and forgive the self or tms will come.

Bill Clinton could shed some guidance perhaps.

That sounds kinda' interesting, what constitutes that form of behavior?
