Posted - 02/03/2013 : 19:40:19 I am new to TMS with much to learn. What I seem to be hearing are two things that are very familiar to me from years of being involved in anxiety disorders treatment.
One is that worry and thoughts are the driving force behind anxiety. This was a hard one for me because I could see other people's worried thoughts, how that skin rash might be cancer or the weak leg MS but I was unable to see my own thoughts and my own preoccupation with symptoms.
In fact for over 30 years my anxiety was little more than a nuisance because I never had any medical or physical problems. It was not until I had a serious diagnosis, and even though it was a misdiagnosis that I went into the hell of this breakdown.
So do I understand correctly that thoughts and worry are also driving force was TMS.
The part that coincides with anxiety treatment that I know in anxiety was not helpful was that buried or denied emotions believed to be the driving force. For years we did psychodynamics and regressive therapies looking for the catharsis that would bring recovery. It never happened people stayed sick for decades. We then switched to CBT or cognitive behavioral therapies that were more efficacious but still lacked recovery for many people.
My approach was multiple disciplinary. I worked with nutrition, exercise, spirituality, lifestyles, family of origin and other modalities. I was able to help a lot of people but having a professional degree did not prevent me from not helping myself.
Do I understand correctly that the preoccupation with symptoms may be the driving force for TMS. I know the Gupa program for fibromyalgia stresses this extensively. He believes that thoughts are the driving force that keeps the nervous system and distress and causes muscle pain.
So I question the repressed emotions paradigm for TMS but I'm open to learning more. |
