I am new to this forum, although I've know about it for some time, and I want to take a moment to offer a bit of inspiration:

I have been a TMS sufferer since childhood (teens) and now I am 40 years old. When I was 19, I was told by an esteemed orthopedic surgeon that my spine was so damaged that I would be in life-long pain with Spinal Fusion Surgery. My condition is Spondylolisthesis, which I'm sure some have heard of. I have a rather extreme case, so I hear, and I was told from a very young age to stop every sport I'd loved, riding in long car rides, sleeping in almost every way but the fetal position, and countless other devastating messages about how my life would be restricted.

The worst one was re: childbearing. The doctor believed that it would be unlikely for me to carry a child to term without significant bed rest... perhaps never even have a child. This was unthinkable to me (as I had been dreaming of being pregnant and a mom since I was 10.) It was a very hard time in my life, and without getting into the whole story here, I'll give you the inspirational part .

I found Sarno's book Healing Back Pain. That isn't the end of the story, as I eventually needed more help and forged a long and wonderful relationship with Dr. Sarno and his patients, but it was certainly the beginning. The end result is that I have been pain-free and problem-free for almost 10 years. I carried three beautiful babies to term (exercising until the day I gave birth.. well, walking the dog at least. That's just cause I'm lazy LOL.) They are now 10, 8 and 5. I also live as full a life as any, work full time, and raise my kids and 2 step-kids (that's right, FIVE KIDS!) with my loving partner.

My friends, on paper I am quite damaged. I used to bring my MRI to my practice to show people just to allow them to understand that you can't always judge a book by it's cover. I have Spondylolisthesis, but that is NOT WHY I WAS IN PAIN.

If I had the time, I would sit here all day and try to inspire each one of you. YOU CAN DO THIS. JUST NEVER GIVE IN TO THE NOTION THAT YOU NEED TO HURT. Try to be brave - I know it's so hard. I wish you all the best and I will check in here as often as possible if anyone has any questions. The book I wrote tells the whole story, but it is REALLY about YOU, not me. I hope to help as many people as I can, because when I spoke to Dr. Sarno shortly after his retirement in the spring, he made it clear that he's just not up to working anymore, and I get it! The man has given his life.

I hope to be one small thing to keep his legacy alive.

xo,
-n.

chickenbone,

have you worked the Sarno program, and attempted the journaling etc.? or are you at the beginning of this journey?

one thing's for sure, if you KNOW your pain is not caused by your 'conditions,' then EXCELLENT! there can be no sustained healing without that solid knowledge. the doubt creeps in and creates other TMS diversions otherwise...
