Posted - 10/30/2012 : 19:52:51 Years ago I have successfully overcome RSI through the TMS theory, so I understand and believe in it. Now I have had chronic hives and angioedema (swelling) every day for going on two months and I'm wondering if it may be TMS related. It did flare up initially right before a really stressful and highly anticipated event. I have had a lot of stressful events happen in the past year (moving, new baby, new job, relationship issues, etc) so it makes sense that it may be TMS.
The thing that troubles me is that most cases of chronic hives are idiopathic and the treatment consists of experimenting with various drug cocktails to control the symptoms. I'm seeing a specialist and right now I am taking antihistamines and zantac, but they aren't working as well anymore and the next steps are more serious medications such as prednisone. I'm wondering if I should stop the medications now and test if it is TMS, or continue down the medical route knowing that they probably won't be able to find a cause anyway. I have done a search on the forum and there are some cases of hives being reported under the success stories, but I am unsure if these are chronic cases, or acute hives. Is there anyone who has overcome hives as their primary TMS symptom?
This is a very debilitating condition as my feet swell so that I cannot walk or wear shoes and I am so itchy that I have scabs all over my body.
Thanks for any insight, Carolyn |

Posted - 11/01/2012 : 15:01:40 That's funny Tom,
It was the last piece of the puzzle, because I discovered it last. Now I usually look at TMS first.
Even though I like the whole health approach, it does require discipline, and may not be necessary if a person is generally balanced in their habits. |

Posted - 11/01/2012 : 14:27:38 A point of clarification:
I did not endorse doing what was depicted in the movie. I merely stated a fact. I don't advise people on how to treat their ailments because what is TMS and isn't is not a matter that we can speak on with any degree of certainty, whether we've been to medical school or not. My point in the posting was that there are two men whose lives were out of control with their weight above 300 lbs., and they just happened to both suffer from the same ailment. When they undertook their juice fast (temporary, not permanent), they both lost weight and their chronic hiving condition that was diagnosed as autoimmune. But I do trust the gifts of Mother Nature a good deal more than the gifts of Eli Lilly. |

Congratulations on your recovery, but why make TMS the last piece of the puzzle instead of the first. Then you could save a lot of time and money not having to do all those things requiring discipline and self denial. We are omnivores, we can eat anything that won't poison us terribly. I would hate to think I would have to give up my lifetime meal ticket to In-N-Out Burger to be "healthy". I'm more into the "borderline gout" diet. I think I'd rather keep my limp then have to give up lobster thermador. |

Posted - 11/01/2012 : 08:38:24 I do not have experience with hives myself, but I have a friend who suffered from hives for a long period of time (probably a year or more)
None the less, she did get over the hives. Her life was very stressful and she was constantly seeking natural remedies and diet to get rid of the hives. I am sure the things she did helped to soothe or control the hives because I do believe that total health can be multi-dimensional. Repressed emotion was probably the breaking point that caused the hives to manifest themselves, but I agree with Hillbilly a juice fast or diet (like a living-foods diet) can significantly help boost your confidence and energy.
She did get over the hives. I just wanted to share that with you to give you additional confidence that you will get past this.
Knowing about TMS, to me, does not preclude doing other common sense things that can boost our immunity and sense of well-being.
Should you stop the medication...From my personal experience with health issues (i.e., dry eye, allergies, etc.) before I found out about TMS, the doctor's made it seem like the medication would not cure my situation, but only help to control it. This led to increased anxiety and overall muscle and back pain (triggered after a chiropractic treatment). During this time (still prior to knowing TMS), I started seeking natural remedies such as exercise and diet). The muscle and back pain led me to TMS because I believed that it was structural and I did not know what to do. I fit the TMS profile. My point is, knowing about TMS was like the icing on the cake (the last piece of the puzzle). I started eating healthy, losing weight, and the last piece was working on my mind. I got better and I do not have dry eye, allergies, or muscle/back pain. It was a process in which I had to believe that the medication was no longer the best route for me. |

With all those stressfull events you've experienced, your hive could very well be mindbody syndromes. Stress can produce all kind of symptoms. I used to get hive on my back and my calves for years. They all went away when I got rid of my tms/anxiety.
If I were you I would try to make changes in my life and my thinking to lessen my stress. Do the thing Hillbilly suggested above, then really think and treat your symptoms as if it is tms/anxiety. (since the doctors are of no help to you).

Posted - 11/01/2012 : 06:38:26 Have you been diagnosed with urticarial vasculitis? If so, there is a movie you can get to watch two men who were grossly obese and had the condition go completely away simply by going on a juice fast. The movie is called Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. I saw it on Netflix a couple of years ago. |
