Posted - 10/16/2012 : 03:23:56 Hi, I just wanted to share this funny little story, well not funny really especially not for the guy involved, but interesting to me as I watched the reactions of people involved. You see two weeks ago I witnessed an acute Phase1 TMS attack. Let me explain. I am a policeman, a team leader in a Tactical Firearms Unit, what most lay-persons refer to as SWAT. Every eight weeks we have to undergo a weeks training, this is a very intensive week which nobody enjoys as it is the week when you are constantly judged and critisized. So two weeks ago off we went to training. On day one I noticed one of the new guys on another team seemed overly anxious, I could actually see him anticipating worst case outcomes to every scenario and getting more and more nervous. On day two things were no better and I had a word with his team leader (who told me to mind my own business). Half way through day two and we were briefed on a particularly complicated training scenario. BAM!! this guy went straight to his knees screaming with a blinding migraine, almost immediately he lost the power in his right arm as well (his shooting hand). Everyone thought stroke, I thought TMS. Anyway he was taken to hospital where of course they found no evidence of stroke and no reason for his apparent arm/hand paralysis. I tried to explain to colleagues the concept of TMS however in this job any mention of tension, stress, anxiety or your mind causing problems are signs of weakness and to be flatly denied. You should have seen the anger and derision my TMS explanation caused. The guy involved soon got better when taken from the work enviorenment and had his training cancelled. however I dread to think wht sort of anxiety and rage must be building up in him now. Anyway thanks for listening, I'm not allowed to talk about it in work because I'm the weirdo that talks about girly things like feelings and emotions!!!. Knowledge is power! Posted - 10/19/2012 : 12:44:04 In the UK it is the problem with the fact that any mention of the mind causing health problems is absolute taboo, because if you have these problems you are 'mental' or weak because you can't cope with life and so not respected and to be pitied.
This seems strange nowadays because depression and the use of anti-depressants is so common but probably most sufferers keep quiet about it because of tht stigma.
Did you see this in the news last year in the UK http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/8669893/ME-researchers-receive-death-threats-from-sufferers.html
I don't want to start an ME war here but I think there is a stress connection but sufferers just won't have it.
In the US where 'seeing my psychiatrist/therapist' is accepted the multi-billion pound health industry ensures that any news such as reading a book curing your health problems will be ignored and laughed at. Every doctor has a vested interest in keeping the lie going, so have the big health insurance companies.
V frustrating.

Posted - 10/17/2012 : 03:51:19 Andy64TMS, in answer to your question as to why I am so open minded about TMS after only 4 posts. Well after my latest and most severe attack in July 2012, which is still ongoing but healing nicely, I recognised the trigger which was an emotional one (I'll not bore you with the details) I felt so emotionally overwhelmed that I made the connection myself (I suspect deep down I must have always known or suspected the connection). I then Googled "Emotions affecting back pain" and found out about Dr Sarno and TMS. From the first page of "Mind Over Back Pain" I recognised the truth, in fact I was reading about myself on every page!! I guess the obsessive perfectionist in me has turned me into something of a TMS zealot as I continually read and gather TMS knowledge (I will have to work on this character trait later). I still however cannot fathom the opposition to this from ordinary people in pain. If I am told something I don't believe I shrug my shoulders and carry on, I dont get angry, I dont show utter contempt or try to rationalize a thousand reasons why it cannot be true. I think that a lot of people on a deeper level suspect the truth but our culture and society has ingrained a deep seated fear in people that anything to do with the mind implies mental illness, which of course is another of societies great taboos. My own brother gets regular injections in his spine, is convinced that his future is in a wheelchair because his doctor told him so, and still he cannot or will not open his mind to the truth, even though he and I have suffered the same symptoms for years, he takes comfort in his prescribed zombie drugs and thinks nothing can be done for him. Well you can lead a horse to water ...etc. Anyway I'm starting to ramble and get on my TMS soapbox so I'll go now. TennisTom - cool link to the cop with the dummy, I found it interesting how he was able to tackle problems by coming at them from a whole new angle instaed of using the old tried, tested and ultimately failed dogmatic approach.

Posted - 10/16/2012 : 10:37:03 boaz, very pleased to hear there is someone like you on one of our SWAT teams. I wonder what will happen when this guy has to face his training again. He might like to rethink his career. |

Posted - 10/16/2012 : 09:41:18 Hi boaz 5301 (Andy, great name),
Excellent post Andy, well done for speaking up. How come you are so open minded after only 4 posts? I’m an Ex Brit and have lived in USA for the last 35 years.
Yes, we live in an era of denial. Just look at the denial that exists in the credit card Industry. My fellow Americans are flabbergasted when I tell them I have never paid one red cent of Interest, ever! This must be my because of my English frugal background. TMS honesty, I’m boasting!

Good story Boaz5301! It's reminds me of the anecdote in one of the Good Doctor's books about the injured soldiers not needing morphine for their pain in hospital once they are away from the stress of war.
I think TMS "attacks" like this will be increasingly ascribed to TIA's, (transient ischemic attack), mini-strokes--it's difficult to bill someone (or insurance) $25,000 for a battery of ER tests and then tell them it "was all in their head".
I still selectively tell folks about TMS but most need the "protection" of their bodily pain from their even greater perceived emotional pain. I don't get too worked up about it if they don't pay heed, it's their loss.
Cheers, tt
P.S. Boas, if you're ever out West to frisco look me up we've got an interesting PD dept. out here, we used to have a bloke who did his beat with a hand-puppet:

Posted - 10/16/2012 : 05:24:21 Awesome story boaz! It takes a lot of courage to step up & tell these people the real reason for their problems. It's sad but I really hesitate to tell people about the TMS ideologies. I mentioned them to one woman @ work with a bad back (herniated disk) & she'd rather go on a waiting list & have surgery than to even crack open one of Sarno's books that I lent her. Take care. |
