Hi eveyone...I hope you can help. Over the years I have had many TMS symptoms: IBS-low back pain-shoulder/neck pain-foot pain-and my most recent urinary frequency, anxiety and mild depression. All urine tests are clear and I was told I have tight pelvic muscles. My background is that I have been a police officer for 29 years. I have seen, heard and smelled horriffic things for 29 years as well as gone through my own issues of a divorce and death of a parent. AS a female officer it was an absolute must that no emotion be shown while dealing with other peoples hardships, traumas and lost. How do I purge myself now of all the repressed feelings and emotions that I have carried with me for so long. THese events did not directly happen to me but I did have to experience them on a daily basis. Any suggestions would be appreciated !

Yes, you have to get rid of those negative thinking. Our brain treat every negative thought as a sign of danger. Negative thoughts produced negative emotions. And when the intensity of those emotions get to a certain level, your "fight or flight" respond kicks in. It will make your muscles tense up and restrict blood flow. Stress hormones will flood your blood stream and create all kind of tms/anxiety symptoms.

I think the best book to help us elliminate negative thought is "Mind Power into the 21st Century: Techniques to Harness the Astounding Powers of Thought - John Kehoe."
This book will change your life! Read it and practice the techniques it describes! It is not a tms book but using the techniques taught in it, you will be able to overcome your tms/anxiety. You can check out Kehoe's informative site: www.kehoe-mindpower.com. As long as you practice his techniques regularly and keep focus on your goals, you will see results in your life. It was also highly recommended by one of our forum's member, Ace1.

Hi HMG, I suggest you read the book "Hope and Help for your Nerve" by doctor Claire Weekes. Many people who could not be help by Dr. Sarno's teaching, cured themselve with Claire Weekes' book. I am one of those.

I'm not a fan of the unconscious but let try to use what Dr Sarno taught to see if it can help you, since you've already read his book. In any of his book, Dr Sarno never suggest to anyone to try to "purge his/her repressed emotions" like you said you wanted to in your post. It is "unconscious", you don't know which emotion or feeling that caused your pain. It could be some of the anger you had a month, a year, or 30 years ago. You don't need to know what emotion started the symptoms for you. All you need are:
1 - You Believe in the tms diagnosis and believe that you symptoms have an emotional cause.
2 - The symptoms are there to distract you from feeling that negative emotion. In order for the symptoms to successfully distracting you, it has to be able to hold your attention. How does it do that?..... by creating fear and health worry.
3 - Without fear, without health worry, the symptom doesn't do the job it suppose to do, then it will cease to exist.
4 - So if you want to get well you have to stop your fear of the symptoms and stop worrying about your health.

The concept is extremely simple, but how to achieve a fearless and worry free mentality is not easy, But if you can make yourself not to fear the symptoms, not to worry about your health, then you will be cure.

The one who suffered for years and years are the one who could not accept the tms diagnosis, they keep looking for an organic or physical cause. And they could not overcome their fear of the symptoms.

Some tools people have use to help them are: Mind power, positive self talk, meditation, praying and give your problem to your God, get so busy and have no time to think about the pain, surround yourself with fun and happiness. Count your blessing. Elliminate negative thoughts... The goal is to stop your fear and to have more positive than negative emotion.

Goodluck HMG.

If the sum of your positive thoughts is greater than the sum of your negative thoughts, your mental health will be in the positive territory.

Thank you Tom....I have read 2 of Sarno's books and I am re-reading them again. I do believe that there is nothing wrong with me and I do exercise daily, running about 4 miles. The whole anxiety thing kicked into full gear when I started thinking of all the things I have seen. I am glad that you said I do not have to keep revisting these things as they have crept into my dreams as well and waking in the morning is not pleasant. I have noticed that I would note the time of a bathroom visit and when I neared a 2 hour mark I would have to go again...I think I have now conditioned myself to that and I am trying to stop the clock watching. I can go a full 8 hours of sleep without having to go so that tells me nothing is wrong with my bladder...its my brain ! Thank you for your kind words regarding my profession, it isn't very often people have nice things to say about us

Hi HMG,

You have all my respect for being a Peace Officer, very few civilians understand what a dangerous and stressful job you do. IMHO, Cops do more good in one day for people than social workers do in a year. There have been several police officers at this board and I believe one even wrote a book about there being cured of TMS. The good news is to obtain relief from TMS symptoms you don't need to do psychological archaeology unearthing all the crap and garbage of the past. You need only understand the simple TMS theory that the symptoms are benign and put there as a psychological defense mechanism to avoid having to feel even greater emotional pain. The subconscious does this for us automatically as a protective device. Modern medicine and snake-oil salesmen are using these moments of pain and weakness to make money off of us.

The good news is the cure is cheap, simple and with-in us. Just read the Good Doctor's book, anyone of them until you believe it consciously--and then sleep on it and let it sink into your unconscious and into your body on a cellular level.

It is fair game to use meds for symptomatic relief. I use Flomax for occasional urinary urgency, I'm sure there is an equivalent med for females, just knowing it's in my travel-kit is enough to relieve much of the anxiety over having to go and go on trips. I've also taken anti-depressants successfully for short periods and mild doses have been found in back-pain studies to help with what's probably TMS. Daily exercise is also very beneficial to help relieve the build-up of mindbody tension and to gain the strength to fight the TMS gremlin.

Good luck and I would also recommend SteveO Ozanich's new TMS book "THE GREAT PAIN DECEPTION" for inspiration that we can take control of our mindbody health even when life hands us a really, really bad hand.

Cheers, it sounds like you are getting a handle on this.

Thanks for the ativan advice...I have used it off and on for a few years. I am aware of all the negatives attached to it. When I need it, I take it to get back on track and then once I am able to practice all of my other anxiety reducing techniques, I am able to easily reduce and stop it. I have never used more than .5 or 1.0 a day. The ativan did not cause the increase in anxiety, the journaling and activating the memories did.

Wavy is right. I'll just add: taper off slowly. These are NOT drugs meant for daily use.

Just wanted to say that ativan may make things worse. There are other options for anxiety - and I'm not saying "Just relax!!"

I had a weird experience with this - about 15 years ago, my acupuncturist told me to go on ativan for sleep. He showed me research that said it was not addictive (turns out he had been addicted to benzos for decades!). Anyway, I began innocently taking it for sleep, but I started getting more and more anxious in the mornings. for a few months

Then I realized I was habituated to a benzo and I went cold turkey (not recommended). Since then I've come to communicate with lots of people who started taking benzo(diazepams) for anxiety, but became more anxious. It's pretty well documented that this happens.

I'm not disapproving of you for needing medication, just knowing how it can make anxiety worse, and create a difficult spiral.

Other than that, I REALLY sympathize with your situation, and having seen so much trauma. There are threads on here about various trauma release methods - such as the Bercelli method (spelling?). Good luck.

Love is the answer, whatever the question

Eric, what's with the annoying upper caps?

THERE IS A METHOD -IN WHICH YOU LOOK AT THE BAD THOUGHT OR FEELING IN YOUR MINDS EYE-BLOW IT UP AS BIG AS YOU CAN GET IT-NOW LOOK AT IT AGAIN-IT MIGHT LOOK SCARY AND DEPRESSING-BUT HERES THE TRICK-NOW THAT YOU HAVE THIS BIG PITCHURE BLOWN UP IMAGINE IT BEING IN A GLASS MIRROR AND TAKE A MENTAL ROCK -GUN OR SLINGSHOT -AND BLOW THE GLASS WITH THE PITCHURE ON IT TO PIECES(OR THROW THE ROCK AT THE PIC)AND WATCH THE NEGATIVE THOUGHT SHATTER-(THIS GIVES US A POWERFUL RELEASE)-REPEAT AS OFTEN -AFTER THE FIRST TIME MOST PEOPLE FEEL BETTER-....IT MIGHT TAKE A FEW TRYS-THIS IS AGAIN A SUGGESTION-IT HAS WORKED FOR ME-----MAYBY YOU 2 -GOODLUCK AT WHATEVER WORKS BEST FOR YOU I HOPE YOU HAVE A GREAT WEEK AHEAD-AND AS YOU SAID IT IS IMPORTANT TO TAKE IT EASY ON YOURSELF

Thanks Eric...Right now I am feeling a bit "broken" from journaling about the past. I think I will wait a bit before I try something else...I am glad you found success in NLP
eric watson Posted - 09/01/2012 : 20:30:04
ive had to take ativan for a year -it worked well for a while-till things got more stressful-have you ever heard of NLP-ITS PRETTY POWERFUL-TONY ROBBINS TEACHS A FORM OF IT-IVE HAD A LOT OF SUCCESS BY LISTENING TO HIS TALKS AND PRACTICING THE PROGRAM-I ALSO HAD TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT THINKING ABOUT ONE THING AT A TIME-I WAS IN A HURRY IN MY MIND-ID BE DOING 1 THING AND THINKING ABOUT 20 OTHER THINGS-ANYWAY THIS IS JUST A THOUGHT-HE REALLY DOES HAVE SOME PROVEN STUFF THAT ORIGINATED LONG BEFORE HE CAME INTO THE PITCHURE-HES GOOD AT EXPLAINING IN DETAIL HOW TO TAKE CONTROL-I USED THE TAPES-THE BOOKS ARE FULL OF BIG WORDS AND SOMETIMES CONFUSING,BUT THE TAPES WILL HAVE YOU WORKING ON THESE THINGS FROM DAY 1 -ITS WORTH A TRY-AND IM SURE IT CAN REALLY HELP WITH THE TMS-IT HAS FOR ME-I WAS WORKING IT FOR CONTROL WAY BEFORE I FOUND OUT ABOUT TMS-ITS JUST ICING ON THE CAKE-
HMG Posted - 09/01/2012 : 19:51:29
Eric....I am on ativan now (low dose) and have been on antidepressants in the past but did not like the weight gain from them and tapered off. Ihave not been in a relationship for six years. Most of the time I am OK with that but somestimes it adds to the emotional mix. Most days I can get by with one dose of .5 ativan but recently I have needed a second dose .
eric watson Posted - 09/01/2012 : 19:29:40

HMG Posted - 09/01/2012 : 16:56:47
Eric...thanks for the reply. I have been journaling and doing positive affirmations and the symptoms seem to be increasing, especially the anxiety. The anxiety is so uncomfortable
eric watson Posted - 08/31/2012 : 14:32:28
HMG I REALLY BELIEVE JOURNALING AND LETTING IT ALL OUT ON PAPER WOULD HELP SOMEWHAT-IF NOT ALOT-ITS LIKE YOUR BRINGING INTO THE NOW WHAT YOU REPRESSED THEN-YOU HAVE TO FACE YOUR FEARS AND ANXIETY TO THE DOOR-SO IN CONTRAST-ITS LIKE YOUR GOING OVER ALL THIS HORRIFIC STUFF AND LOOKING IT DEAD ON -DECIDING THIS IS HOW I FEEL NOW -IM STILL STANDING -IT DIDNT DESTROY ME TO BRING IT BACK UP-IT DIDNT KILL ME TO FACE IT 1 MORE TIME-BUT THIS TIME AS LETTING IT GO AND WALKING INTO PEACE-YOU MIGHT CRY -OR ETC..... BUT THE POINT IS TO FACE IT-EXCEPT IT-AND DECIDE TO HAVE PEACE ABOUT IT WITOUT HIDING IT FROM YOURSELF-HOPE THIS HELPS A LITTLE
