Hi Joan

You are not alone with this, I too have chronic facial pain, along with many other symptoms I understand how you're feeling, because pain in the face plays with your emotions. Under normal circumstances, if someone were to hit you in the face, it makes you want to cry, and that's how it feels all day if I were to dwell on this facial pain. My pain began 8 months after my mum passed away. I know that I too am stuck, and am trying very hard to do many of the things that Balto suggests. I have read SteveO's book once, and am reading it again more slowly this time. I'm also going for some talk therapy, because I think I have repressed a lot of feelings about my mum's death that really need to be aired. When I think about her I still very sad (over 4 years now since she passed away) and I miss her terribly, but I also have a sense of unfinished business, there's something I just can't let go.

Just wanted you to know that you're not alone. I'm not berating anyone else's suffering here, because believe me, I have had my share of screaming sciatica too, and know how draining that can be too, but pain in the face is so hard to distract yourself from, because it's SO "in your face" all the time obviously. But I'm going to keep on trying and believing that one day I will wake up and it will have miraculously gone.

I had pain in the face once before. It was very scary, the burning sensation, the pain was terrible, pulling, punching like, tense, tight feeling, hard to describe. It made me depress for a while. But it went away after about a month. It didn't stay long like in your case.

You are probably not in a very pleasant state emotionally. Caring then loosing a loveone is very tough for anyone to handle. It is one of the major stress in life.

My thought is there are multiple thing happening here. You are probably still in the mourning and/or denial state. Your stress level have not been low for a long time. And now you are worry about your own health and are very fearful of the symptom. Like you've said: "obsessed with the pain". That fear, that obsession with pain has now become a habit, an addiction. You couldnot think about anything else but the pain.

To get well, you need to break free of that habit, get rid of that addiction. You need to stop focus on the pain, the symptoms, and most importantly, stop thinking what it would do, what would happen if the pain don't stop. The first arrow is the pain, the second arrow is the fear. To stop the pain you need to stop that second arrow.

You need to slowly and peacefully shift your focus, your attention to something else instead of your symptoms. Practice meditation a couple times a day for a few minutes each. Do some positive affirmation morning and night for a few weeks. Spend time with people as much as you can, get involve in meaningful conversation with others, focus on others. Get busy doing some projects, volunteer at some charities... Do anything with the goal of forgeting the "self".

It will be difficult the first few days, but it will get easier with each day passed. And then one day when you are confidence enough to realize that your pain is nothing to be affraid of, the pain will subside and then cease.

The tools are there for us and they cost nothing to use. Use them as much as you can for free. We all have to go through them in order to get well. There is no other choice but to do the work.

With tms/anxiety doctors don't have pills to cure us. They can only show us the way and we have to do the work ourself. You have to be persistent and do the work. Don't sit and wait and hope for a miracle. The miracle is right inside us, it is our mind, we just need to take control of it.

Hope you feel better soon.

No, I don't know everything. I'm just here to share my experience.

You know...pain in the back and sciatica for years on end is hard enough to deal with...I'm not sure how well I'd be able to tolerate pain in my face for years.

I tried to go back and read other posts you've written and there's been some good advice given. Have you read SteveO's book yet? Have you tried different methods of journaling? What about relaxation and indulgence in things you love to do? Have you considered talking to a therapist?
